1 Day Lake Mburo Safari in Uganda Trip DETAILED SAFARI ITINERARY

Day 1: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park with a stop at the Uganda Equator En Route.

This 1 day Lake Mburo Safari game viewing tour in Uganda starts after an early breakfast preferably at 6.30 a.m. at your place of stay in Entebbe or Kampala after which you embark on a 240km (3-4 hours) drive to Lake Mburo National Park in the southwest of Uganda.

Drive through Uganda towns and villages enjoying the colorful scenery of the ‘Pearl of Africa’ accentuated with hues of green.

Stopover at the Uganda Equator crossing: You have a very short break after driving 77km from Kampala (about 15 minutes) at the Uganda Equator crossing at Kayabwe which is a renowned site for photography since most of the travelers prefer taking pictures with one leg in the southern hemisphere and the other in the northern hemisphere. Here take some photos and stretch your legs.

There are also geographical experiments that can be carried out for keen geographers to demonstrate the geographical separation of the two hemispheres, but you may not have much time for polar water experiments. You retreat from this break and continue on the drive to Lake Mburo National Park. Upon arrival, you head to the park office as you view the game and birds. At the park office, you are assigned an Uganda Wildlife Authority armed guide.

Game drive: Go for a three hours game drive that offers fantastic views of Burchell’s Zebras/Plains Zebras, Rothschild’s Giraffes, Common Elands (the world’s second-largest antelope, second to the Giant eland), Impala (only found here in Uganda), Cape Buffalos, Common warthog, Oribi, Defassa waterbuck, and Reedbuck.

Of course, there are birds here too! Over 350 species have been recorded in the park with some rare and endemic species. Some of the top birds you search for are the endemic Red-faced Barbet, Rufous-bellied Heron, Bateleur, Coqui Francolin, Grey Crowned Crane, Brown-chested Lapwing, Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Black-bellied Bustard, Red-headed Lovebird, Ross’s Turaco, Brown Parrot, Green Wood-hoopoe, Common Scimitarbill, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Red-faced Barbet, White-headed Barbet, Long-tailed Cisticola, Nubian Woodpecker, Red-shouldered Cuckoo-shrike, White-winged Tit and Yellow-breasted Apalis among other birds.  Retreat from the activity for relaxation and lunch.

Boat cruise on Lake Mburo: After lunch, connect to Rwonyo jetty for an afternoon 2-hour boat cruise on Lake Mburo. In addition to the attractive scenery and simple pleasure attached to being on the water, this thrilling afternoon boat ride offers reliable and spectacular sightings of hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, waterbucks, and bushbucks.

You can also look out for the three species of otters that inhabit the lake. Several waterbirds including African fish eagles, Kingfishers, Egrets, and Herons can all be seen on the lake while Ross’s turaco and Narina trogon are frequently seen in lakeside thickets.

Lake Mburo is also a great place in Uganda to see the elusive African Finfoot, which is generally associated with still water below overhanging branches

Drive back to Kampala: Retire from the encounter, and say farewell to the great staff in the Lake Mburo National Park as you depart to Kampala. You will be in Kampala in the evening.
