Other interesting bird species here include Sandgrouse, shrikes, migrant wheatears, pipits, and Common Nightingale. Afterward, enjoy your packed lunch and drive to the fabulous Lake Manyara National Park, arriving at your lodge in the late afternoon.

After some relaxation, go game viewing and birding in the park. A spectacular part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara’s rich variety of natural habitats are set around the soda lake, itself a haven for clouds of flamingos and other fantastic waterbirds. With over 400 bird species, this is a paradise for birding enthusiasts!

The forested valleys are home to Silvery-cheeked Hornbill and Crowned Eagle, and open savannah plains support a large elephant population as well as giraffes, buffalo, and many antelope species. There are fewer predators but topping the list are rare tree-climbing lions. You’ll return to your lodge for dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Your destination today is the rolling grasslands known to the local Maasai as Siringeti – the place where the land moves on forever – and one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders, the Serengeti National Park. One of the oldest ecosystems on earth, Serengeti hosts the world’s greatest remaining concentration of plains animals.

The park is world-famous for its annual wildebeest migration, an iconic and dramatic scene in wildlife documentaries for decades, and a true bucket list experience. Serengeti is also home to over 500 bird species, including about 11 endemic or near-endemic species such as Fischer’s lovebird, Grey-breasted spurfowl, Rufous-tailed Weaver, Usambiro barbet, and Grey-crested helmet-shrike.

On arrival, enjoy a game drive as you continue to your camp in central Serengeti. The area forms part of “the Great Migration” and is home to Seronera Valley, one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Cats (lions, leopards, and cheetahs) on thrilling hunts.

Although it’s always difficult to find, this is one of the best places in East Africa for leopards.

After lunch, descend 2000 feet to the crater floor. Ngorongoro Crater is a natural geological wonder, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to the highest density of big game in Africa. Formed by a massive volcanic eruption, this world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera (264km2) boasts astonishing 25,000 large mammals including all the Big 5 and plenty of predators.

In addition to mammals, birdlife within the caldera and on the top of the crater rim is superb. Over 500 species are known from this area including the endemic Rufous-tailed weaver, the beautiful Golden-winged sunbirds, and pink Flamingoes.

After a game drive, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Inside, you seek myriad grassland such as Kori bustard, Black-bellied Bustard, Grey-crowned cranes, Common Ostrich, Secretarybird, Southern ground hornbills, etc. You will also look for woodland birds, as well as scavenging vultures amidst a thronging mammal spectacle virtually unequaled on earth.

Later in the morning, ascend back up to the crater’s rim enjoying some more highland forest birds. As you move higher keep your eyes open for flowering Leonotis; if you find a patch, you might get to savor the coolest sunbird spectacle in Africa; the impressive Golden-winged, coppery-colored Bronze, and iridescent-purple Tacazee Sunbirds all competing for nectar from the same flowers.

Then embark on a drive south to Tarangire National Park, a less explored birding gem. Arrive at your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Tarangire is one of our favorite parks in Tanzania, partly because it is quieter than the other reserves, but also because of its incredible natural beauty.

The park is most famous for its mid-year dry-season game viewing when tens of thousands of animals gather at the life-giving Tarangire River, including Tanzania’s largest elephant herds. You will see towering baobabs – the bizarre ‘upside-down trees’ – in Tarangire and it is also the one place in Tanzania where arid-area antelope such as the fringe-eared Oryx and the long-necked gerenuk can be seen

The park supports cool bird species including three Tanzanian endemics and near-endemics: Ashy Starling, Yellow-collared Lovebird, and Rufous-tailed Weaver. The lush grasses are full of ground birds like Kori Bustard, Common Ostrich, Southern Ground Hornbills, and Red-necked and Yellow-necked Francolins

Day 9: Full Day in Tarangire National Park

Start your day with an early breakfast at the lodge and then back into Tarangire for a full day of birding and game viewing. You will once again return to the lodge for lunch and some downtime before we head back out again.

Apart from the specials, another 550 species of birds have been recorded in Tarangire and you will search for White-bellied Bustard, Woodland Kingfisher, Red-billed Buffalo Weaver, Lilac-breasted Roller, Bearded Woodpecker, Southern Red Bishop, Knob-billed Duck, Banded Parisoma, Red-winged Prinia, Green Wood Hoopoe, Brubru, Magpie Shrike, Red-and-yellow Barbet and many more.

Raptors are also well represented in Tarangire, and you’ll have a chance to tick White-headed, White-backed, Hooded, and Lappet-faced Vulture, Bateleur, Brown Snake Eagle, Tawny, Martial Eagles, African Hawk-eagle, African Harrier-hawk, Little Sparrow hawk, Pygmy Falcon, Verreaux’s Eagle-owl, Pearl-spotted Owlet, and African Scoops Owl.
