Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Queen Elizabeth Park with a stop at the Equator

Welcome to East Africa!  The first day of your fantastic 11 days Uganda Rwanda safari tour begins with an early morning pick up at 6:30am from your hotel by Prime Safari guide using one of our 4×4 safari cars.  You set off for fascinating adventure drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park which lies 417km away from Kampala in South Western Uganda.

During this epic journey, you will enjoy exciting road stops at different points of the journey, first at Mpambire drum village home for making drums, second at the Uganda Equator Crossing Kayabwe exploring this significant geographical site – the Sun’s way and the point of separation between the northern and southern hemisphere. A well interpreted water experiment is performed to show the separation of these two poles.

Continue on the drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park making another stop at Igongo Cultural Center for an amazing traditional lunch where you enjoy a local food organically produced and freshly served.

Along the way, you will encounter the eastern edge of the western arm of the great east African rift valley and while here you will have impressive views of Queen Elizabeth which lies in the valley floor and while you can stop to have a photo moment before proceeding to your already pre booked lodge for relaxation from this journey dinner and an overnight stay as well.

Day 2: Do morning game drive, afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise

We start our day with an early breakfast at the camp, and then we are off to the park  on this 2nd day of the 11 days Uganda Rwanda safari tour .Our game drive this morning through the Kasenyi Plains will give us a chance to tick some impressive African big game species, including African Elephant, African Buffalo, Kob, Bushbuck, Hippopotamus, Forest Hog, Common Warthog, Leopard and various smaller creatures not forgetting the avian life here that may include African Hobby, Rüppell’s Vulture, Bateleur, Brown Snake Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Grey Kestrel, African Finfoot, African Skimmer, Black bee-eater, Caspian Plover,  Grey-winged Robin-chat, Palm-nut Vulture, Papyrus Gonolek, White-backed Night Heron and Yellow-throated Cuckoo, along with many others. After our game drive we will return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch.

In the afternoon, we have another fantastic activity planned! We will gather at the Mweya jetty for an afternoon boat cruise starting at 2pm. During this boat cruise, you have the opportunity to sail on the tranquil but turbid waters of the Kazinga channel a 42 km long channel that connects Lake George to Lake Edward. This cruise offers you an opportunity to see at close range the highest concentration of Hippos over to 1000 individuals and Nile crocodiles that are seen basking along the shores of the channel.

After the boat cruise we will do a short game drive along the channel track as we head back to the lodge. We will relax and have dinner, chatting about trips we would all like to do in the future to exotic places on the planet.

Day 3:  Do Chimpanzee trekking in Kalinzu forest and walking safari in Maramagambo.

This day kicks off with an amazing breakfast served at 6:00am after which you will be transferred by your guide to the Kalinzu forest where you get to go through a short briefing about the entire chimpanzee trekking experience.

From here in the company of an armed park ranger, embark on jungle walk as you search for these great humans of the wild the chimpanzees. The highlight of the day will be meeting the exciting creatures .You will be wowed by how much in common we share with these great apes as they laugh, look after the young ones, hug and kiss just as humans do.  You will see other primates that reside such as the black and white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, and Grey monkeys.

After this amazing encounter, you will return to your lodge for a lunch break then later on in the evening when the scotching sun has reduced, you will venture out for a nature stroll in Maragambo forest with bird species as well tropical tree species. If you have a passion for reptiles, you can visit the bat caves that harbor numerous snakes and bats as well. You will retire back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4:  Transfer to Ishasha sector for a full day game drive in search of tree climbing lions.

Today is another day for you to continue with your exploration of Queen Elizabeth National Park. After breakfast at 7:00am, you check out of the lodge and bid farewell to the lodge staff as you embark on a 3-4 hours’ drive to the Southern end of Queen Elizabeth national park.

A game drive in this sector of the park puts you in prime position to encounter the famous tree climbing lions that you will see lodged in tree branches in an attempt to escape the bugs on the ground which make it disrupt their peace of mind if they stay on ground.

Ishasha is one of the most favorite sectors in Queen Elizabeth National Park, partly because it is quieter, less travelled and also has its incredible natural beauty. It is an awe-inspiring place, comprising of open savannah, river valleys, mixed vegetative landscapes and swamps. It provides breathtaking views of the Virunga Steppe and the Rwenzori mountains to the west.

You will have a short lunch break at your lodge and then proceed for an evening game drive to catch up with a sundowner as we chat about the day’s events. At the end of this game drive, you will transfer to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Engage in a morning game drive and transfer to Bwindi

We will start the day with an early morning game drive at 6:30am to catch up with the nocturnals returning to their dens and to enjoy the beautiful African sunrise. We will return to our lodge after a 2-3 hours game drive after which we pack our bags, check out and bid farewell to the lodge staff as we head to the tropical jungles of Bwindi Forest National Park that is a UNESCO world heritage site.

You will be welcomed by green misty views of the thick Forest. You will head to the lodge for check in and relaxation a waiting the next day’s exciting Gorilla tracking first encounter.

Highlight of the day: Catching up with the nocturnals returning to their dens and the African sunrise is so marvelous.

Day 6: Do Mountain Gorilla trekking and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for a boat ride

After an early morning breakfast, depart from the lodge with your packed lunch and gather at the park headquarters where you will be welcomed by the park sector warden who will take you through the history of the gorilla conservation in this particular park sector and Bwindi park in general. With your armed ranger in the lead, embark on a trek, searching for your allocated gorilla family.

You will be granted a full hour with these magical beings to watch them as they go about their daily lives and if you’re lucky you might get to see the young gorillas break the 7-meter rule as they get closure to you to have you incorporated in their games. After the full hour contact with these gorillas transfer back to the park center where you get awarded a Gorilla tracking certificate for your tracking efforts.

From here, transfer to Lake Bunyonyi where you will enjoy a relaxed boat cruise along this second dippiest lake in Africa exploring some of the prominent Islands that have traditional myths attached to them .

Highlight of the day: Sitting in silence on the cold ground of a Ugandan forest for 60 minutes viewing the Mountain Gorillas

Day 7: Transfer to Volcanoes Park and visit the Twin lakes of Musanze

You will then checkout of the lodge and drive to Volcanoes National Park driving from Bwindi National Park, cross the Rwandan border at Cyanika and then drive 80km or 1-2 hours’ drive to your lodge at your lodge in Volcanoes National Park while you enjoy impressive scenic views of the Virunga ranges that will take your breath away given their incredible beauty.

This road adventure to Volcanoes National Park although short is quite comfortable as it is done on a tarmac road for the biggest part of the journey. You will check into your lodge and enjoy have lunch later.

In the afternoon, you will transfer to twin lakes of Musanze and embark on the canoe ride along these beautiful lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera for beautiful sightseeing of these magical water bodies and the Virunga Volcanoes not forgetting the traditions of the communities thriving along the lakes. Retire for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Do Mountain Gorilla trekking & transfer to Gisenyi

After breakfast at your lodge, dressed in appropriate Gorilla tracking attire your guide will drive Connect to the park headquarters of the Volcanoes National Park at Kinigi to attend briefing at 8am. If you arrive earlier, you will catch up with the impressive Kinyarwanda performances and a free cup of Rwandan coffee served at the site. After the gorilla family allocation and briefing, you head to the misty Forest in search of the endangered Mountain Gorillas for the second time during this day of the 11 days Uganda Rwanda safari tour.

Trek through the impressive landscapes with the Volcanic soils which may not be all that firm and can be slippery thus the need to wear steadfast hiking boots. However, you will be delighted to be in the company of Volcanoes impressive flora and fauna which include over 178 species of birds of which close to 13 of these are Albertine endemics. The eventual encounter with the gorillas involves one full hour of direct viewing as they forage and socialize, the young gorillas playing among other interesting aspects. You will enjoy the photogenic moments and retreat from the activity when your time is done.

You will proceed to Gisenyi which is about 70km or 1.5 hours’ drive away from Volcanoes and if you wish, you can do an optional visit to the Dancing pots project here which is carried out by the Batwa people of Rwanda. Today about 33,000 Batwa remain in Rwanda represent 0.4 per cent of the population. These people are particularly renowned for their skills as potters, dancers and musicians. This encounter presents an ideal moment of interaction learning their great skill as you engage in carrying out some pottery work with them.

You will drive along the scenic tea estates of the Rwandan countryside and as you get nearer to Nyungwe National Park, you will encounter the tropical forest jungle that welcomes you to this park. The resort towns of Kibuye and Cyangungu allow you to explore the resort life of the local people in case you opt to engage in a visit to these lakeside towns, you will return to the lodge in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

You will get to see the chimpanzees as they groom their young ones, show affection to themselves through hugs, kisses and pant calls which is totally amazing to watch, the trek lasts  2 2-3 hours with one full contact hour with the chimps.

After this encounter you will settle for lunch at your lodge and in the afternoon, you connect at Uwinka Visitor Centre to embark on an optional afternoon Nyungwe canopy walk. Day 11: Transfer back to Kigali. Visit the King’s Palace at Nyanza

This  final day of the 11 days Uganda Rwanda safari tour  summarizes what has been a journey to remember, depending on the time of your flight departure, you will wake up at 7:00am and have breakfast then begin the final leg of  this remarkable trip as you transfer back to Kigali driving 230km or about 6 hours’ drive.

A stop will be made in Butare in the south of Rwanda to visit the Ethnographic Museum which is the largest Museum in Rwanda with over 100,000 artifacts that bring out the history and traditions of Rwanda in detail. After this encounter, you embark on the tour to the Nyanza palace which is a Royal home to the two Kings of Rwanda namely King Musinga and his successor King Rudahigwa.

The impressively built Kinyarwanda hut whose architecture dates back to the times of these Kings. There are also the traditional Inyambo Cows with their beautiful horns and can make a considerable parade.  You arrive in Kigali and then proceed to Kigali International Airport to catch your departure flight.

11 Days Uganda Rwanda Safari Tour – GORILLA TREKKING TIPS

  • Mountain gorillas sometimes nest far from the start of your gorilla trek; you should pace yourself and drink plenty of water.
  • Eating, drinking and smoking near the gorillas is forbidden – designated time and place will be communicated.
  • Bwindi being a tropical forest, it can rain anytime so we encourage you to carry a rain poncho
  • Waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots are essential.
  • Gardening gloves for protection against stinging plants
  • Long trousers and long sleeved sweaters or shirts while in the forest to avoid insect stings.
  • Photography is permitted, although you must not use flash
  • Porters are available to help you carry your day pack for a small charge
  • As you prepare to come for your Uganda gorilla adventure, please do some exercises so that you prepare your body for gorilla trekking which can last between 3-8 hours
  • In case you can’t walk for a very long time, you shouldn’t really worry about not being able to do gorilla trekking because there are potters who can carry you throughout at a small extra cost.
  • Carry your sunscreen lotion to keep your skin safe from the tropical heat & sun rays
  • When you get to the gorillas, don’t make noise because this agitates the gorillas
