Tarangire is a lovely quiet park, off the beaten safari track, most famous for its elephants that congregate in herds of up to 600 animals! The 2,850km2 park is named after the Tarangire River and its landscape is primarily open savanna dotted with acacia woodland and giant baobab trees.

It is a dry season refuge, where large numbers of migratory wildlife; Elephants, Zebras, Wildebeests, Elands, Buffalos, and other animals concentrate around permanent water sources. The large numbers of game animals attract numerous predators, especially Lions. In fact, after the Serengeti, Tarangire has the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania!

Another attraction of Tarangire is the numerous termite mounds that dot the beautiful landscape. After breakfast, embark on a 2-hour drive northwest to Lake Manyara, a scenic park at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. Along the way, take a village walk in Mto wa Mbu village to discover a side of Tanzania that many visitors miss.

The village is one of the only places in Tanzania where there are representatives from all 120 tribes living happily side by side, making it a real melting pot of cultures. You’ll get a good feel for the social side of the village – the farms and the milling machines, the schools, markets, artisans in their workshops, and churches.

Continue to your lodge located at the edge of the park for lunch and relaxation. In the late afternoon, go for a game drive. 70% of Manyara’s 648km2 area is covered by the shallow, alkaline lake itself, but, the park is not all about the lake, there is much more to it!  It has a variety of other diverse habitats; acacia woodlands, wet forests, algae-streaked hot springs, and swamps.

Still, the park has the highest concentration of Baboons (Olive baboons) anywhere in the world, and it’s home to the rare Tree-climbing lions!

Other mammals to look for today include Buffalo, Elephant, Hippos, Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Gazelles, Impala, Waterbuck, Bushbuck, Dik-dik, Warthog, Leopard, Hyena, Jackals, Honey Badger, Otters, and Egyptian Mongoose.

Manyara is home to a variety of animals, but one of the main reasons why travelers visit the park is the birds. In fact, some experts say that if a birder only had to choose one park to visit in Tanzania, then this is it!  It hosts over 400 species and is especially known for the flocks of thousands of flamingoes that feed along the edge of the lake in the wet season.

In 1991 there were an estimated 2 million Greater and Lesser Flamingoes here, along with 200,000 Great White Pelicans! Although you won’t get to see that, there are still some excellent species you can look for including Herons, Ducks, Herons, Storks, Egrets, Cormorants, Kingfishers, Jacanas, Plovers, Lapwings, Vultures, etc.

At about noon, arrive in Serengeti. Enter through the southern region and enjoy a game drive as you continue to your lodge in central Serengeti, home to the world-famous Seronera Valley. Day 10: Drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the Crater Tour

After a leisurely breakfast, make your way out of Serengeti.

Enjoy one last game drive, admiring Africa’s wildlife as you drive to the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. The name Ngorongoro comes from the Maasai pastoralists who named the area after the sound produced by the cowbell (ngoro ngoro)!

You reach your lodge for lunch and relaxation.

Then descend 2,000 feet to the crater floor and look for the mammals and birds that call the inside of Ngorongoro their home. On the way into the crater, learn some cool facts about this incredible natural geological wonderland.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers over 8,500km2 adjacent to the plains of Serengeti and it’s a World Heritage Site. Its main feature is the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unbroken volcanic caldera on Earth.

The grasslands within the crater host 25,000 large mammals including Wildebeest, Hartebeest, Buffalo, Zebra, Gazelles, Elands, Hippos, Elephants, Rhinos, Waterbucks, Bushbuck, Baboons, Reedbuck, Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Hyena, Bat-eared Fox and Serval. Ngorongoro Crater sometimes referred to as “the eighth wonder of the world”, is best known for its natural beauty and abundance of diverse wildlife.

It is also a photographer’s dream… Most of the animals are very relaxed and habituated to the presence of humans and vehicles, and the cloud-draped crater walls make for dramatic pictures and memories. While a major attraction is of course the mammals, birding within the crater and on the crater rim is very good.

You can spend some time ticking special species such as Common Ostrich, Secretary bird, Kori Bustard, Crowned Crane, Bateleur, Long-crested Eagle, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Black-bellied Bustard, Jackson’s Widowbird, Golden-winged Sunbird, etc.
