A birding expedition in this swamp leads you to an encounter with the incredible Shoebill stork, the most eagerly sought of all African birds.

This impressive and somewhat dinosaur-like bird stands over 5ft tall and weighs up to 7kg. Grey in color, the shoebill is named for its large, hooked-tipped bill that is shaped like a shoe. Tan with brown splotches, 20cm long, and almost as wide – the bill is the largest among all living bird species. When perturbed this amazing bird loudly claps its upper and lower bill, rather like outsized castanets. Without a doubt, this is one of the weirdest birds on Earth.

Aside from Shoebills, Mabamba is home to over 300 bird species, many of which can be sighted on a canoe paddle along the narrow channels of the swamp. These include African pygmy goose, lesser jacana, Blue-breasted bee-eater, Carruthers’s cisticola, papyrus gonolek, white-winged warbler, swamp flycatcher, Viellot’s weaver, grosbeak weaver, black-headed weaver, northern brown-throated weaver, and Clarke’s weaver.  After this exciting birding trip, you will settle for lunch in Entebbe then embark on a 252 km (3-4 hours) drive to your hotel in Masindi town for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

You will soon realize why, in both evolutionary and genetic terms, ape species (like the gorilla) are actually much closer to humans than monkeys are.
