Day 1: Arrive In Nairobi Via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Upon arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, our company representative will be there to meet you and welcome you. You will be driven to your comfortable hotel in Nairobi, the capital and largest city in Kenya.

The name comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi, which translates to “cool water” and refers to the Nairobi River which flows through the city. This busy city, which has an estimated population of  9 million people in the metropolitan area, is popularly referred to as the ‘Green City in the Sun.’ It was founded in 1899 by the colonial authorities in British East Africa, as a rail depot on the Uganda Railway.

After settling into your accommodation, you can relax and recover from any jet lag you may have. But, if your schedule allows it, you may choose to visit some of the city’s highlights like Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Karen Blixen Museum, Giraffe Centre, or Nairobi National Park, where the plains game roams freely with a surprising background of skyscrapers!

After a good breakfast on day two of your 15 days Kenya safari & Mombasa beach tour set off on a drive of about 5 hours north to the Samburu National Reserve.

Leaving behind the busy city of Nairobi, you enter the countryside with its rolling hills, open plains, and mountains. Drive past villagers herding their livestock in a scene unchanged in centuries until the landscape becomes wilder and more rugged, and the plains of the reserve open out before you.

A belt of green in the far distance is the ribbon of the Ewaso Nyiro River, which is set about by beautiful doum palms and riverine forest and is the source of life-giving water for all the wildlife of this semi-arid region. Samburu is known for its lion population and in fact, this is one of the places where Joy and George Adamson raised Elsa the lioness, of Born Free fame.

You’ll arrive at your lodge or camp in time for lunch and relaxation. Then, set out on a game drive in the gorgeous reserve to discover its plentiful wildlife, including the so-called “Samburu Special 5” – Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, and Somali Ostrich – which are unique to this area of Kenya.

This wonderful 165km2 reserve was established in 1985.

While it’s peaceful and quieter than most of other East Africa’s game parks, Samburu still boasts an incredible wealth of classic African safari big game species. Predators include Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, African Wild Dogs, and Hyenas.

Big game species include Elephants, Buffalo, Hippos, and many antelope species like Gazelle, Dik-dik, Impala, Lesser and Greater kudu, and Waterbuck.

There are also over 450 bird species, including the Vulturine Guineafowl, Taita falcon, Golden pipit, and Secretarybird. The Critically Endangered African Pancake Tortoise and massive Nile Crocodiles also call the reserve home.

It’s also home to the last 2 remaining northern white rhinos on Earth and generates income through wildlife tourism and complementary enterprises for re-investment in conservation and community development.

You’ll get to your camp in time for lunch. After lunch, enjoy a game drive in search of the Big 5 and other African animals. Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a haven for orphaned, abandoned, and rescued chimps. It’s the only place in Kenya where you can view these highly intelligent great apes who share around 98% of our DNA and are considered our closest living relatives.

You’ll spend a few fascinating hours watching these captivating primates as they go about their lives, and you might be surprised by how very similar their behavior is to our own. You will stay out until sunset and hopefully you can find predators as they start to become more active at this time.

Discover an amazing variety of birds as you drive along the lake’s salty shores.

In fact, Lake Nakuru has declared a national park in 1961 because of its great flamingo population. The lake’s blue-green alkaline water levels vary annually and this, with other associated environmental changes, causes substantial variation in the flamingo population.

However, when they are present en masse the lake turns a gorgeous rosy pink. Apart from flamingos, expect to see pelicans, cormorants, egrets, herons, ibises, ducks, spoonbills, fish eagles, and kingfishers.
