Explore the scenery and some of the lake’s major islands to learn about the traditions attached to them.
Perhaps the most intriguing is the Akampane Island/Punishment Island. It is where unmarried girls who became pregnant were brought by their fathers and punished by abandoning them on this island. The girls would starve to death or drown when attempting to swim back to the mainland. For a girl to become pregnant before marriage was shameful to the family.
