Day 1 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Arrive in Rwanda – Kigali International Airport & If time allows, visit the Gisozi genocide memorial 

Arrive in destination Rwanda following a flight from your country of origin. You connect with your driver guide at Kigali Airport and transfer to the hotel for check in and refreshment. If it is still early, you embark on the tour of the Gisozi genocide memorial tour exploring this historical site that demonstrates the tragic genocide that befell the destination Rwanda in the year 1994. The collection of human remains, the writings about genocide and audio presentations give a detailed picture of what exactly transpired during the Rwanda’s 1994 infamous ethnic conflict. Retire for overnight.

Day 2 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari:  Transfer to Nyungwe National Park. Visit the Royal Palace at Nyanza and National Museum of Rwanda in Butare en route

After breakfast at your Kigali hotel, embark on the drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park to the south of the country. An en route stop will be made at the King’s palace in Nyanza – the site of the last functioning Rwandan monarchy known to have had two reigning Kings namely King Musinga and King Rudahigwa. The site features good traditional hut with remarkable ancient architecture, King’s equipment and the traditional Inyambo cows. Another stop is made in Butare for lunch after which you visit the National Museum of Rwanda with a range of over 800,000 artifacts detailing the history, culture and heritage of Rwanda. Proceed on the drive to arrive in Nyungwe National Park in the evening for relaxation dinner and overnight.

Day 3 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Chimpanzees Trekking and Nyungwe Canopy walk

An early transfer to Kyamudongo Forest sets off at 5pm in order to catch up with the briefing time. The activity commences at 8am in full control of Rwanda Development Board park rangers exploring the verdant montane forest of Nyungwe with 13 primate species including the Chimpanzees and the largest grouping of Black and White colobus Monkeys in Africa. The activity lasts about 2 – 5 hours with one full hour of chimpanzee viewing. You retreat from the encounter for relaxation and lunch. At 2pm, you gather at Uwinka visitor center for the canopy walking experience. Considered to be the first of its kind in East Africa and the third in Africa, Nyungwe canopy walk offers remarkable views of the forest, panoramic view of the deep forested valleys, birds and primates that thrive in the habitat. The activity normally lasts a maximum of 2 hours. Retire for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 4 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Transfer across the Congo border to Kahuzi Biega National Park. Explore Chibati Falls and the Lwiro Scientific Research Station for chimpanzee viewing

After breakfast, embark on the drive to Congo crossing at Cyangungu border post to Kahuzi Biega National Park. The afternoon is marked by a nature walk to Chibati Falls for magical sight-seeing experience and the Lwiro Center where the Orphaned Chimpanzees can be viewed.

Day 5 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Track the Eastern Lowland Gorillas & take a boat ride to Idjwi Island. Visit the Island village, the King’s Museum, Quinquinas & Pineaple plantations

Set off for the Eastern low land gorilla trekking adventure in Kahuzi Biega National Park. It is a historical journey to the search of the one of the great Ape sub species in one of the most remote places in the world. These gorillas are fond of thriving in extended groups and they are themselves larger in size compared to the Mountain gorillas. The low land gorilla trek lasts about 1 – 4 hours inclusive of one full viewing hour. From the trek, you embark on the boat ride to Idjwi Island in Lake Kivu – one of the Great Lakes of Africa. From the harbour, you connect with a motor bike to the lodge. You then undertake an Island walk exploring the King’s Museum, the extensive Pineapple plantations and the Quinquinas before settling for overnight.

Day 6 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Motorbike transfer to the harbour & transfer by boat to Goma. Enjoy the Views of Virunga Volcanoes including Nyiragongo Volcano

Take up a Motorbike to the harbour where you will take a boat ride to Goma in the North Kivu Province. The afternoon offers remarkable views of the Virunga Volcanoes which is a chain of eight mountains starting from Uganda through Rwanda to Democratic Republic of Congo. The famous Nyiragongo Volcano with its violent crater lake is also part of this Virunga landscape. The park is also home to the critically endangered Mountain gorillas. Thus, you can identify a spare day and track these Gorilla species if interested. Retire for overnight.

Embark on the transfer to the famous Ituri forest driving through Komanda and Mambsa. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at the lodge.

Day 9 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Forest trek in Ituri forest exploring the Pygmies Village 

Ituri forest extends to 63,000km² with the 1/5 of it covered by Okapi Wildlife Reserve. The forest features the beautiful Ituri River and the ancient home to the Bambuti Pygmies. The Okapi Wildlife Reserve features over 5000 Okapi population found nowhere else in the world except Congo. The park also shelters over 4000 elephants, Chimpanzees, leopards and crocodiles. Other wildlife in Ituri forest includes; water Chevrotain, forest buffalos along with 300 bird species. You enjoy these wildlife possibilities in the forest as you proceed on the trek to the Mbuti Pygmies.

Day 10 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Community Interaction and transfer back to Epulu

The morning is spent with the Mbuti pygmies the hunter gather tribal group noted to be among the oldest indigenous groups of people in the Congo basin. With 30,000 – 40,000 population estimate, the Bambuti feature unique traditions including the way of life that are worth exploring. Retreat from the deep layers of Ituri forest and connect back to Epulu.

Day 15 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Explore the Botanical Gardens in Kisantu viewing the endemic floral species of Congo

The Botanical Garden at Kisantu is positioned at 120km to the south of Kinshasha in the Bas-Congo province. Standing at 225 hactares, this maiden garden is traversed by 12.5km of trails along with pathways providing for the movement of pedestrians and the vehicles. The gardens were created by Jesuit Justin Gillet in the year 1990 and were later revamped between 2004 and the year 2008 with a hand by National Botanical Garden of Belgium and European Union. The botanical gardens are among the key ex-situ conservation sites in the region of Central Africa with over 3,000 native and foreign species. The gardens includes among others Cactus green house, the Orchid shade house among others which are truly worth exploring.

Day 16 of the 17 Days Rwanda Congo Cross border Adventure Safari: Visit the Lola ya Bonobos Reserve, the Kinsuka and the Lukaya Waterfalls  

You undertake a visit to the Lola ya Bonobos. The Bonobos scientifically known as Pan Paniscus are noted to be members of Great Apes thriving only in Democratic Republic of Congo on a world scale. Listed as endangered on IUCN red list, they are 50,000 – 75,000 Bonono populations in the whole world and are feared that they might get extinct in 75 years time. The Lola Ya Bonobo takes care of rescued bobonos before re-introducing them to the wild. From, here you explore the Lukaya waterfalls before retiring for relaxation and overnight.
