The park’s grassy plains are dotted with hundreds of massive ‘upside down trees’ (baobabs) and are home to a dense wildlife population, which is most spectacular between June and September in the dry period.

During this time, thousands of animals – elephant, buffalo, giraffe, eland, wildebeest, kudu, hartebeest, and the rarely seen Oryx – migrate from the dry Masai steppe to the Tarangire River looking for water. Another reason why travelers visit the park is the birds. It hosts over 400 species including big flocks of flamingoes that feed along the edge of the lake in the wet season.

Regardless of this speculation’s truth, it is highly unusual to visit the crater without encountering Africa’s largest cat. Their fiercest competitors, spotted hyenas, are also present in large numbers.

The diverse architecture is a testament to the various cultures– African, Arab, Indian, and European – that have occupied this exotic island.

Stroll through winding alleys and admire the ornately carved and studded wooden doors, archways, and weathered shutters. Primarily a Muslim country there are numerous mosques in Stone Town as well as two cathedrals to serve the Christians who arrived with the British.

Visit the Arab fort, built by Omani Arabs after the Portuguese were expelled. It has served as a prison and garrison, and today is a drawcard for visitors with its cultural center, market, restaurants, and amphitheater.

The old slave market is the site today of the Anglican Cathedral Church of Christ, a building that houses many tributes to the city’s tragic past, one of which is an altar built over the spot where the whipping post stood. All newly captured Africans were tied to the tree here and whipped to test their mettle.
