Day 1: Transfer From Arusha To Ngorongoro Crater & Do An Afternoon Crater Tour

Your affordable short 2 days Tanzania safari in Ngorongoro Crater begins at 7:00 am with pickup from your hotel in Arusha or at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) latest by 9.00 am. This will enable sufficient time for you to transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (approximately a 4-5-hour drive).

Along the way, you’ll drive through beautiful Maasai Villages. The name Ngorongoro actually comes from the Maasai; the Maasai pastoralists named the area after the sound produced by the cowbell (ngoro ngoro)! You’ll also pass through the colorful town of Karatu, arriving in time for a late lunch at your lodge.

After lunch, take some time to rest and then go on a thrilling game drive. Descend 2000 feet to the crater floor and look for the mammals and birds that call the inside of Ngorongoro Crater their home. It is an unforgettable experience!

On the way into the crater, learn some amazing facts about this incredible natural geological wonderland. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) covers some 8,292 square kilometers adjacent to the legendary Serengeti plains. It is a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site and is listed as an International Biosphere Reserve.

The conservation area’s main feature is the Ngorongoro Crater. This world’s largest unbroken and unfilled volcanic caldera was voted as one of Africa’s 7 Natural Wonders by the Seven Natural Wonders organization in 2013. It is surrounded by incredibly steep walls rising 610 meters above the floor. It’s incredibly beautiful and definitely a must-visit place on any safari to Tanzania or even east Africa.

The grasslands within the crater host some 25,000 large animals including all the Big 5 (Lion, Leopard, Rhinos, Buffalo, and elephants), as well as Cheetahs, Hyenas, Wildebeests, Zebras, Gazelles, Hippos, Waterbucks, Bushbucks, Bat-Eared Foxes, Painted wolves, and Servals. The only animal you won’t see here is a giraffe, whose long legs are unable to cope with the steep sides of the crater.

You’ll return to the crater rim and go back to your lodge for dinner, and overnight.

Day 2: Half-Day Game Drive in Ngorongoro Crater & Transfer Back To Arusha (Kilimanjaro International Airport)

After an early breakfast, go for a half-day game inside Ngorongoro Crater. Take in the breathtaking views from the crater rim as you make your way to the bottom, where animals roam the lakes, rivers, woodlands, and hills.

While in Ngorongoro, you will also have a chance to encounter the colorfully dressed Masai people who often water their cattle at the lake here. And if all goes to plan, you will see all of the Big Five animals. This is the best place to see some of Africa’s last remaining black rhinos.

Also look for Wildebeests, Zebra, Hyenas, Eland, Cheetah, Jackals, Caracals, Gazelle, Flamingos, and Ostriches. The crater walls form a stunning backdrop and seeing herds and solitary animals roaming within it make for some of the best wildlife viewings in Africa. The only animal you won’t see here is a giraffe, whose long legs are unable to cope with the steep sides of the crater.

After the thrills and excitement of the day, you’ll have a picnic lunch on the floor of the crater. Then, drive up the steep road out of the crater. Thereafter, set off on a 4-5 hour drive back to Arusha. You may stop for lunch or some last-minute shopping. You will then be dropped off at Kilimanjaro International Airport for our flights home at the end of this exciting 2 days Tanzania safari Ngorongoro Crater.
