After breakfast, a 5-hour drive will take you to the magnificent wilderness of Samburu, a peaceful quiet park in the northern semi-arid region of Kenya.

You will pass Mt Kenya, Africa’s second highest mountain (after Mount Kilimanjaro) at 5,199 meters above sea level. You’ll arrive in time for lunch at your lodge or camp in Samburu National Reserve. You’ll have some time to relax after lunch and then set on your first game drive.

Covering an area of 165km2, Samburu has wealth of wildlife, including more than 900 African Elephants, all the three African Big Cats (Lion, Cheetah, and Leopard), 4 of Africa’s Big 5 animals, and various species of antelopes.

Of great interest are the so-called Samburu Special 5 – Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, the long-necked Gerenuk, and the blue-necked Somali Ostrich – which are unique to this area of Kenya.

African predators such as the Leopard, Lion, Cheetah, Hyena, and Wild dog sightings are common in Samburu. The reserve was one of the locations where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised “Elsa,” the lioness made famous by the best-selling book and award-winning movie “Born Free”.

Birdlife is also abundant, with over 450 species, including the gorgeous Vulturine Guineafowl, Yellow-necked spurfowl, Lilac-breasted roller, Secretary bird, Taita falcon, Golden pipit, African darter, white-headed vulture, and martial eagle.

After your game drives in the evening, take a cultural tour at Samburu village outside the reserve. Closely related to the Masai, the cattle, goat, and camel-herding Samburu people also wear a similar traditional dress of blankets and beads. Discover more about their way of life, and participate in activities that define a typical Samburu homestead, such as crafting traditional ornaments and milking goats/cattle.

Day 4: Drive Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Afternoon Game Drive & Visit A Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

After a relaxed breakfast today, take a scenic 3-4 hour drive south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, located in the foothills of Mt Kenya. This premier non-profit wildlife sanctuary generates income through wildlife tourism and complementary enterprises and re-invests it in conservation and community development.

Situated on an area of 90,000 acres, Ol Pejeta hosts over 10000 large mammals including East Africa’s largest black rhino population, a population of southern white rhinos; our planet’s last two northern white rhinos, all of the Big 5 animals, and orphaned chimps.

Upon arrival, you’ll freshen up and enjoy lunch. At around 3 pm, you embark on a game drive in the conservancy.

You will also visit the Sweet Waters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a haven for rescued, orphaned, abandoned, and abused chimpanzees (mainly victims of illegal pet trade in Central, East, and West Africa) who are often psychologically or physically scarred, and allows them to lead “wild” lives in safety.

Ol Pejeta features one of Kenya’s greatest predator concentrations, in addition to being a sanctuary for rhinos, chimpanzees, and the Big 5. There are about 70 Lions, 100 Spotted Hyenas, thirty Cheetahs, twenty Leopards, and 33 African wild dogs, as well as Jackals, Bat-eared foxes, and Serval cats.

The Masai Mara is world-famous for the annual migration of over 2 million Wildebeests, Gazelles, Topi, Elands, and Zebras to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the Great Migration and one of the New 7 Wonder of the world.

The reserve is named in honor of the Maasai people, the area’s ancestral/current inhabitants, and their description of the area – “mara” means “spotted” in the Maa language, due to the many trees dotting the landscape.

All of the Big 5 as well as uncommon animals including Bat-eared foxes, Black-backed jackals, Serval cats, and Roan antelope may be found in the Masai Mara.
