Amboseli National Park is a relatively small park by Africa’s standards, but this 392 square kilometer park offers a diverse range of landscapes from dry savannah to delta-type swamps. It was first set aside for preservation in 1906, established as a national park in 1974, and declared an International Biosphere Reserve in 1991.
Although primarily known as the best place in the world for viewing free-ranging elephant herds, Amboseli offers a vast array of other wildlife ranging from the “Big 5” animals to over 400 bird species. On day four of your 3 Days Amboseli Safari Kenya, you have a full day to explore wondrous Amboseli. You’ll enjoy both morning and afternoon game drives to witness the wildlife in one of the spectacular national parks on the continent. You’ll start early, as the morning is the best time to see the animals at their most active.
Your tour guide shall lead you in search of Africa’s iconic animals such as Elephants, Hippos, Lions, Leopards, Hyenas, Cheetahs, Wild dogs, Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Hartebeest, Dik-dik, Kudu, Jackals, Bat-Eared Foxes, Fringe-Eared Oryx, Long-Necked Gerenuks, Serval, Warthog, and Yellow Baboon. If the weather plays along, you may enjoy breathtaking views of iconic Mount Kilimanjaro.
You will also look out for the park’s abundant bird life, especially in the vicinity of the swamps and lakes where you can see a large variety of water birds. There are pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, lily-trotters, egrets, hamerkops and the rare Madagascar Squacco heron can sometimes be seen. So far, 47 raptors have been identified, including the rare Taita falcon and southern banded harrier eagle.
After a fantastic full day in Amboseli, you will return to the lodge in the late afternoon for relaxation. In the evening you can sip on a sundowner on an observation platform overlooking a waterhole, where elephants and other animals often come to drink. Your final day of the 3 Days Amboseli Safari Kenya starts with a leisurely breakfast. After that, enjoy one final game drive in Amboseli. Amboseli means a “salty, dusty place” in the Maasai language, but underground streams flowing from the melting ice cap on Kilimanjaro keep certain areas of the park well supplied with water, which in turn draws large herds of elephants and a variety of birds.
Elephants are the most famous residents of Amboseli, present in high numbers and featuring some of the largest body and tusk sizes in Africa. These graceful giants can be found everywhere in Amboseli, enjoying waters in marshes, treading dusty tracks led by a dependable matriarch, or, sometimes, posing for thrilled, camera-wielding tourists against the backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro.
