Day 1: Transfer From Arusha to Ngorongoro Conservation Area & Do a Crater Tour.

Your affordable short 3 days Tanzania safari tour starts with pickup from your Arusha hotel at 7.00 am or at Kilimanjaro International Airport latest by 9.00 am. This will allow enough time for you to transfer to Ngorongoro Crater (about a 4-5-hour drive).

En route, you will pass beautiful Maasai Villages. The name Ngorongoro actually comes from the Maasai; the Maasai pastoralists named the area after the sound produced by the cowbell (ngoro ngoro)!

You’ll also drive through the town of Karatu, a small, colorful town that serves as a popular overnight stop for visitors exploring the area’s many game parks.  You will reach in time for a late lunch at your lodge.

After lunch, have some time to relax and go on a game drive. Descend 2000 feet to the crater floor and look for the mammals and birds that call the inside of Ngorongoro Crater their home. It is an unforgettable experience!

On the way into the crater, learn some cool facts about this incredible natural geological wonderland. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) covers some 809,440 hectares adjacent to the legendary Serengeti plains. It is a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site and listed as an International Biosphere Reserve.

The conservation area’s main feature is the Ngorongoro Crater. This world’s largest unbroken volcanic crater was voted as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa by the Seven Natural Wonders organization in 2013. It is surrounded by incredibly steep walls rising 2,000 feet above the floor of the volcano. It’s incredibly beautiful and definitely a must-visit place on any safari to Tanzania or even east Africa.

The grasslands within the crater are home to about 30,000 animals including Lion, Leopard, Rhinos, Buffalo, and elephants of the Big Five. Other mammals include Cheetahs, Hyenas, Wildebeests, Hartebeests, Zebras, Gazelles, Elands, Hippos, Warthogs, Waterbucks, Bushbucks, Reedbucks, Bat-Eared Foxes, Painted wolves, and Servals. Mysteriously there are no Giraffe or Impala inside the crater.

You’ll return to the crater rim and go back to your lodge for dinner, and overnight.

Ngorongoro sometimes referred to as “the 8th wonder of the world”, is best known for its natural beauty and abundance of diverse wildlife, which makes it one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations. This UNESCO-listed crater is truly something every naturalist and wildlife lover should witness.

It is also a photographer’s dream. Most of the animals are very relaxed and habituated to the presence of humans and vehicles, and the cloud-draped crater walls make for dramatic pictures and memories.

While a major attraction is of course the mammals, there are over 550 recorded bird species within the crater and on the top of the crater rim. You will certainly spend some time ticking a good number of special species such as Flamingos, Common Ostrich, Secretarybird, Kori Bustard, Crowned Crane, Bateleur, Martial Eagle, Rüppell’s Vulture, Black-bellied Bustard, Golden-winged Sunbird, etc…
