Covering an area of about 370km2, Lake Mburo Park is Uganda’s smallest savannah park, located conveniently close to the highway that connects Kampala to the parks of western Uganda. The park features magical savannah grass and woodland with much acacia. It is the best place in Uganda to see the Common eland (the second largest antelope in the world) and has about 350 species of birds and 68 different species of mammals including Burchell’s zebras, Rothschild’s giraffe, Impalas (which, in Uganda, only lives here), Cape buffalos, Defassa waterbucks, Common warthog, Oribi, Reedbuck, Spotted hyenas, Jackals, and Leopards.
There are 5 lakes within the park which are home to hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of waterbirds, with Lake Mburo being the largest and fully inside the park boundary. Lake Mburo contains 6 fish species including Tilapia and the fishing exploration will be carried out at Mazinga sport fishing spot. Day 1: Drive to Lake Mburo NP with a stop at the equator en-route & enjoy a boat cruise on arrival
Day 2: Undertake a full day fishing experience on Lake Mburo, at Mazinga sport fishing spot.
Day 3: Enjoy a morning game walking safari in Lake Mburo Park & transfer back to Kampala
We’ll start our day with an early breakfast at around 6.30 am, then check out of our accommodation in Kampala and embark on a 240km (3-4 hours) drive southwest to Lake Mburo National Park. The journey to Lake Mburo Park will give you opportunities to see remarkable landscapes and scenery in Uganda’s countryside. You’ll pass agricultural fields of different people working or seated by the stalls of crafts or fresh fruits and vegetable markets.
We’ll make a stop en route at the Uganda Equator crossing at Kayabwe trading centre (about 77km from Kampala) for amazing photo shoots and water experiments can be made here to justify the geographical separation between the northern and southern hemispheres. From Kayabwe, we proceed on the drive past Lukaya town a famous spot for Muchomo (grilled meat) vendors and Masaka town before approaching Lyantonde.
Upon arrival at Lake Mburo National Park, we’ll check-in at the lodge, settle for lunch after which we’ll connect to Rwonyo jetty for an afternoon 2 hours boat cruise on Lake Mburo. In addition to the attractive scenery and simple pleasure attached to being on the water, this stunning boat cruise offers reliable and spectacular sightings of Hippos, Crocodiles, Buffaloes and Waterbucks.
Several waterbirds including African fish eagle, Kingfishers, Egrets and Herons can all be seen on the lake while Ross’s turaco and Narina trogon are frequently seen in lakeside thickets. Lake Mburo is also a great place in Uganda to see the elusive African finfoot, which is generally associated with still water below overhanging branches. Retire from the encounter and do a simple game drive as you connect to the lodge.

After breakfast at around 8.00 am, we’ll embark on a whole day sport fishing adventure on the scenic Lake Mburo. The Lake supports a range of 6 fish species and these include the Tilapia which is the common, the Lungfish along with the Mudfish. The designated fishing spot Mazinga and anglers are required to bring their own equipment for fishing.
On this sport fishing encounter, you will a variety of other wildlife, as Lake Mburo is a natural haven for beautiful flora and fauna. The shores teem with animals and birds. Crocodiles and hippos are permanent residents and buffalos come to drink during the dry season. The wide variety of resident birds includes Malachite Kingfishers, Pied Kingfishers, African Fish Eagles, Rufous Long-tailed Starlings, Blue-headed Weavers, Green-necked Doves, Hammerkops, Pelicans, Herons, Cormorants and even rare Shoebills.
Retire to the lodge and enjoy an evening campfire roasting/grilling your delicious Tilapia that you caught yourself. Rest for overnight

After breakfast at around 7.00 am, we’ll undertake thrilling 4-5 hours game viewing and bird watching adventure in Lake Mburo National Park on foot in the company of an expert local ranger guide. The extensive savannah environment of this little scenic park can be better explored on a walking safari. The safari walk at the sunrise allows us to explore the moist savannah dotted with magical acacia species supporting a range of wildlife and birds. We’ll have possibilities of seeing large herds of Zebras, Impalas, Buffalos and other fantastic savannah animals such as Giraffes, Elands, Waterbucks, Warthogs, Oribi and various others as the checklist of mammals reach 68 species.
We’ll also encounter a variety of birds including Red-faced Barbet, only seen in Lake Mburo, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Saddle-billed Stork, Brown-chested Lapwing, African-wattled Lapwing, Carruther’s Cisticola, Tabora (Long-tailed) Cisticola, African Scops Owl, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Grey-crowned cranes and White-winged Warbler plus much, much more.
We’ll also hike to Kazuma Hill for beautiful views of the area and the myriad of lakes below including Lake Mburo and Lake Kacheera the only permanent water sources in the area. You retreat from the 3 – 4 hour encounter and embark on the transfer back to Kampala 240km about 3 – 4 hours’ drive. No accommodation is included tonight. If you would like to stay longer, we can book your post-tour accommodation at our finish point hotel if required.
