4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari Bwindi Tour DETAILED SAFARI ITINERARY

Day 1 of the 4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari Bwindi Tour: Transfer to Bwindi which comes with en-route stop at Uganda Equator point

You will have an early morning breakfast at 6:00 am at your hotel after which you will be picked up and briefed by your safari guide assigned to lead you on this safari adventure. After getting comfortable in the 4×4 safari car, you will embark on this 8 -9-hour journey covering approximately 520km. During this amazing journey, you will enjoy exciting road stops at Mpambire drum center and have an encounter with local artists as they manufacture a wide variety of local musical instruments such as the drums, African chairs. Your next en’ route stop will be done at the Equator which is 77km from Kampala where you get to have an equator experience on how to differentiate the Northern from the Southern hemispheres and also have a photo moment.

From here you will proceed with the rest of the journey to enjoy a locally inspired lunch buffet at Igongo country hotel during your lunch break. You will continue with your journey to Bwindi passing through the beautiful Mirama hills that have been tamed by locals who are growing bananas and other foods stuff on the slopes of these hills. Along the way look out for sightings of local people carrying riding bicycles loaded with farm produces such bananas.

You won’t also miss seeing women carrying their children monkey style as they have them strapped in their backs. A final photo stop will be made at the Great Lakes Museum in Kabale where you get to see the magnificent sculpture named the African tree of life. This tree is made of different sculptures that depict the different forms of life of Africans. You can take a moment a pose for photos before you continue with the rest of your journey to the lodge in Bwindi.

Day 2 of the 4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari Bwindi Tour: Do gorilla trekking and have an evening village walk to the Batwa / Bakiga

Dressed in the appropriate Gorilla trekking attire and with your packed lunch, you will commence on your journey to the park headquarters. You will gather for briefing in the morning at 8 am where you are also allocated the respective gorilla families to track and receive your briefing about the adventure ahead. With your armed ranger in the lead, embark on a trek, searching for your allocated gorilla family. During the trek, you will see bird species endemic to this park, some other primates here such as the Black and white colobus monkeys, L’hoest monkeys, different species of lizards, the rare 3 horned chameleon etc.

The Uganda gorilla trek tends to take 2 – 8 hours depending on the Gorillas’ movements and you will have one hour to interact with the gorillas. Mountain gorillas are always welcoming with the Silverback beating a little of his chest to demonstrate his might and also welcoming his family. The young gorillas are very playful and are at times not aware of the 7m rule thus can try to draw closer to even touching on your body – save it by taking some steps away to observe the distance. Please ask any question about gorillas and their habitats along with taking pictures so long as you have the opportunity to do so. After your one hour with the gorillas, you will embark on the trek back to the headquarters for debriefing and receive a gorilla trekking certificate to take home as proof that you undertook the prestigious Africa gorilla trek, then return to the starting point and connect to the lodge for relaxation.

In the evening you will engage in a Batwa or Bakiga community walking tour. The Batwa Pygmies are the shortest people in the world and are the indigenous tribe that used to live in Bwindi Forest before it was declared a protected area in ordered to preserve the Gorillas. During this tour, you will have an up-close adventure of them exploring and understanding their daily lives when they still lived in the forest and now, as well as their history.

Being in close contact with the endangered rare Mountain Gorillas will be the highlight of the day.

Day 3 of the 4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari Bwindi Tour: Do second gorilla trekking and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for an evening boat ride

After having breakfast, you will embark on the second Uganda gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi where you have the option of trekking a different gorilla family and gain a different encounter than you had on the previous day OR take on the same group for the second time. The process will be as was during the previous day ending with a certificate rewarding ceremony. After this adventure here, you will transfer to Lake Bunyonyi the second deepest lake in Africa dotted with 29 Islands for relaxation. Upon arrival to this beautiful tropical gem of the Kigezi highland also dubbed the “Switzerland of Africa” because of its amazing vegetation and terrain, you will be fascinated by the tranquil waters of this lake and the communities on some of the historical islands of the lake Bunyonyi area.

You will enjoy a motorized canoe cruise on the lake where you are taken through the history behind several of these islands such as the Akampene island which is also known as the Punishment island, Bushaera, Kyahunge, Njuyeera meaning “White cottage” also known as the Sharp’s Island and Bucuranuka which is the upside-down Island. From this canoe ride, you will proceed to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

The highlight of the Day: Second gorilla trek and an exploration canoe ride on  Lake Bunyonyi with fascinating views.

Day 4 of the 4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari Bwindi Tour: Transfer back to Kampala/Kigali

After having breakfast, you will embark on the transfer to Kampala 420km and Entebbe 470km from Lake Bunyonyi. During this 470km return journey to Entebbe, you will drive through the rolling hills of Mirama which will fascinate you given how the locals here have managed to tame these wildlands by cultivating along these steep slopes. Along the way back you will encounter many local men carrying farm produce on their bicycles headed towards the nearest local markets.

You will make an en’ route stop for lunch at Igongo country hotel just a few kilometers outside Mbarara town to enjoy a locally inspired lunch buffet comprised of healthy organic food. From here proceed with the rest of your journey back to Entebbe airport where your safari will come to an end as you catch your departure flight back home.

4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari Bwindi Tour GORILLA TREKKING TIPS:-

  •   Mountain gorillas sometimes nest far from the start of your gorilla trek, you should ready yourself for a long walk and drink plenty of water.
  •    Eating, drinking and smoking near the gorillas is forbidden – designated time and place will be communicated.
  •    Smoking while inside the forest is strictly forbidden
  •    Bwindi being a tropical forest, it can rain anytime so we encourage you to carry a rain poncho
  •    Waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots are essential.
  •    Gardening gloves for protection against stinging plants
  •    Long trousers and long-sleeved sweaters or shirts while in the forest to avoid insect stings.
  •    Photography is permitted, although you must not use flash
  •    Porters are available to help you carry your day pack for a small charge
  •    As you prepare to come for your Uganda gorilla adventure, please do some exercises so that you prepare your body for gorilla trekking which can last between 3-8 hours
  •    In case you can’t walk for a very long time, you shouldn’t really worry about not being able to do gorilla trekking because there are potters who can carry you throughout at a small extra cost.
  •    Carry your sunscreen lotion to keep your skin safe from the tropical heat & sun rays
  •    When you get to the gorillas, don’t make noise because this agitates the gorillas
