5 Days Safari Uganda Trip − DETAILED SAFARI ITINERARY
Day 1: Transfer To Murchison Falls National Park, Visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Enroute.
At around 6.30 am, shortly after breakfast at your hotel in Kampala (the capital city of Uganda), we will embark on a 375km (7-8hours) drive to Murchison Falls National Park. We will pass via Luwero as we enjoy a panoramic drive northwest through the former battle zone of the Luwero Triangle, the impressive rural landscapes of Uganda with a lush green cover, scattered human settlements, towns, and markets where you will see people going on with their daily life. Here you can make a stop and take a photo or buy a snack
On the way, we will visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a 2 hours rhino tracking encounter which is usually done on foot in this Uganda rhino restoration project. Following the extinction of Uganda’s rhino in the early 1980s during the period of civil unrest and heavy poaching, a sanctuary has now been established to breed southern white rhinos, and restore rhino populations in Uganda’s protected areas in a later stage. Apparently, a count of 22 rhinos thrives in the sanctuary.

Another stop can be made in Mubende to visit the Nakayima Tree, the best-known Bachwezi-associated sacrificial site in Buganda. The tree is estimated by scientists to be between 500 and 1,000 years old. It is a compelling piece of natural engineering towering almost 40m above its park-like surrounds like an oversized surrealist sculpture whose fin-shaped buttresses fan out from the base to create around a dozen cavernous hollows, each of which is dedicated to a particular spirit.
The most popular spirit dedicated to the tree is of course Nakayima (fertility and various illnesses) and Ndahura (smallpox), but others with their buttressed ‘rooms’ include Nabuzana (marriage), Walumbe (death and diseases) Mukasa (lakes and rivers), Bamweyana (madness). The tree remains an active shrine visited by Bachwezi cultists from all around Buganda and Bunyoro to pay homage or leave sacrifices (coins, cowrie shells, gourds, food, etc) to relevant spirits.
Every so often, a group of cultists will spend a night by the tree, where they might roast a goat or pig in honor of the incumbent priestess, who claims to have left below the tree and serve in that role since the 1960s. We will have our lunch in Mubende after which we will continue on the drive to Kampala and this marks the end of our 5 Days Uganda Safari.
