Oral history holds that the collapse of the Bachwezi Empire in the 15th century led to the formation of several smaller polities of which Bunyoro initially emerged as the most powerful. In the 16th century, the Omukama (King) of Bunyoro took advantage of his prowess by orchestrating a series of cattle raids that depopulated Buganda and Ankole of cattle and led to a devastating famine.
The tide of events turned when one day a sky fell ominously dark during daylight hours, prompting the terrified Omukama to flee back to Bunyoro leaving behind a number of stolen cattle. Banyankole thought after the eclipse that the cows had fallen from heaven and named them “enduga mwiguru”. It was a great moment for them since they were able to start breeding new herds.
From Biharwe, we will proceed to Igongo Cultural Center for the tour of the cultural museum which features collections of the tribes of southwestern Uganda, the sculptures of historical people, and cows before settling for lunch at its remarkable Kahwa Kanuzire restaurant. We continue to Lake Mburo National Park 33km from Igongo, enter through Nshaara gate and connect to Lake Mburo for an afternoon boat cruise where you have the opportunity to explore counts of Hippos and Nile crocodiles.
