5 Days Wildlife Safari In Kenya DETAILED SAFARI ITINERARY

Day 1: Drive from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park, Afternoon Game Drive.

At the start of this 5 Days Wildlife Safari in Kenya, you’ll be picked up from your pre-tour accommodation in Nairobi at around 07:30 am. Leaving the bustling city of Nairobi, you drive southeast for about 233km/2-4 hours to Amboseli National Park, one of Kenya’s most scenic parks, located near the border with Tanzania.

Amboseli covers just 392km2, however, is a core part of the much larger Greater Amboseli ecosystem, a massive area of over 8000km2.

Its signature attraction is the sight of hundreds of big-tusked elephants set against the backdrop of Africa’s tallest mountain (Mount Kilimanjaro at 5895m) – one of the most iconic images of Africa. Here, you can see everything from lush primeval swamps to open, dry plains.

‘Amboseli’ means ‘salty, dry place’ in the Masai language but underground streams flowing from the melting ice cap on Kili keep certain areas of the park well supplied with water, which in turn attracts huge elephant herds and plenty of birds.

You’ll arrive in time for your lodge. After lunch, have a short break and then go on a unique game drive and see your first wildlife on this 5 Days Kenya wildlife safari!

Amboseli has incredible fauna and flora diversity, and you could see its famously photogenic elephants and heavyweight predators (lion, leopard, hyena, and cheetah), as well as their prey such as Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, and Antelope.

You will only return to your comfortable accommodation at sunset and have dinner under the vast star-filled African sky.

Your day two of the 5 Days Wildlife Safari in Kenya will kick off with a hearty breakfast at around 6.00 am. You then enjoy a full day in Amboseli with a picnic lunch and sensational views of Mt Kilimanjaro.

Your guide will lead you in search of animals ranging from the Yellow baboon, Blue wildebeest, Coke’s hartebeest, spotted hyena, striped hyena, Black-backed jackal, Honey badger, Bat-eared fox, fringe-eared Oryx, long-necked gerenuks to towering giraffes, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Serval, Warthog, and Zebra. Bird watchers will be mesmerized by over 420 bird species.

However, Amboseli’s most renowned residents are the elephants, present in high densities and sporting some of the largest body and tusk sizes in Africa.

These largest land mammals on Earth can be found all over Amboseli, enjoying waters of the marshes, striding dusty trails led by a trusted matriarch, or, occasionally, posing against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro for stunned, camera-wielding tourists.

Amboseli’s elephants also have another claim to fame. Most of these herds and bulls have been the focus of the longest-running study of elephant behavior in the wild.

The Amboseli Elephant Research Project, initiated by Cynthia Moss and Harvey Croze and operated by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, has centered on researching and monitoring the elephants of Amboseli for 50 years.

After a fantastic full day in Amboseli, you will return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Day 3: Visit Tsavo National Park & Do an Afternoon Game Drive

You will leave Amboseli at around 8.00 am, making your way further southwest. You are heading for Tsavo National Park, about 127km (3½ hours) drive away. As part of the broader Amboseli ecosystem, something is captivating about Tsavo – a feeling of vast space and ancient magic of the truly wild.

Thick red soils stain the tough skins of its sizeable elephant population, and the sight of a herd of red elephants crossing the Tsavo River beneath lush raffia palm trees is unforgettable.

The sometimes-harsh beauty of Tsavo captured the heart of Denys Finch Hatton (‘Out of Africa’ – Karen Blixen’s lover) in a way no other wild space ever had, and it was here that he was killed when the plane he was piloting crashed.

From untimely deaths to man-eaters and poaching wars, Tsavo has not had the easiest road but now, combined, Tsavo East and West account for the largest of Kenya’s protected spaces with over 2,000,000 hectares and one of the world’s largest protected wilderness areas.

You’ll arrive at your lodge on the west side of Tsavo (Tsavo West National Park) early afternoon and settle for lunch.

After lunch, you will have some time to relax and then set out on an afternoon game drive looking for animals in the park, including maneless male lions, Buffalos, elephants, lesser kudu, klipspringers, and more. After your first game drive in Tsavo, return to the lodge for dinner, and overnight.

Day 4: Full-Day Safari in Tsavo West National Park

On day four of your 5 Days wildlife safari in Kenya, you have a whole day dedicated to exploring this unique area. Tsavo West is more developed than Tsavo East National Park. It’s topographically captivating, and its dramatic mountains, hills, inselbergs, and sheer cliff faces are a result of ancient volcanic eruptions.

Below the volcanic Chyulu Hills, a natural reservoir of water percolates through the porous rock before finally emerging, filtered, at Mzima Springs. You can enter a glass viewing chamber to watch the life underneath the surface of a crystal-clear pool – including Crocodiles, Hippos, and thousands of primeval-looking fish.

The dense date and raffia palms and a variety of other fruiting trees attract a diversity of bird and primate life, making the springs a veritable oasis, especially during the dry season.

Not far from the springs, are the spectacular Shetani lava flows. “Shetani” means “devil” in Kiswahili: the flows were formed about 200 years ago and local peoples believed that it was the devil himself emerging from the earth.

This vast expanse of folded black lava spreads for 50km2 across the savannah are now inhabited by nimble klipspringers, ubiquitous hyraxes, and lounging leopards. The nearby caves, formed by the same volcanic activity can be freely explored, by those brave enough to do so! After exploring Tsavo, you will return to your lodge to freshen up and enjoy a delicious dinner.
