On this 8 days Mountain Elgon trekking tour in Uganda, you will hike and discover the secrets of Mt Elgon, a magnificent extinct shield volcano that features Africa’s 8th highest point, rising to 4,321m at Wagagai peak. At 4,000km², Elgon has the broadest base of any free-standing mountain anywhere in the world and also features the world’s largest intact mountain caldera, 40km² wide. For the local Bagishu people, Elgon is the embodiment of their founding ancestor Masaba and refers to the mountain by this name. They assert that Masaba emerged from a cave from Mount Elgon, 500 years ago.

The mountain is beautiful and has extraordinary features such as Afro-montane forest and Afro-alpine vegetation studded with stands of giant lobelia and groundsels; cliffs, caves, rivers, waterfalls, hot springs, gorges, and of course amazing mountain peaks, in addition to birds and mammals. Our 8 days Mountain Elgon hiking Uganda safari adventure will follow the shortest Sasa trail which takes 4 days to reach Wagagai peak. The Sasa route is the shortest but toughest trail to the peaks, traversing the community land and allowing you to explore Bagisu farming, settlements, and culture.
