This is a whole day encounter in the city of Kigali exploring its heritage on foot. The day long walk takes you to various sights and sounds of Kigali including the impressive Kigali markets to explore the real business life of the local people, the street walks to share light moments with the cosmopolitan people that traverse the city streets daily, visiting the Uburanga Art Studio a famous art studio that produces counts of paintings along with sculptures that have moved the Rwandan art a distance, the Gisozi genocide memorial which is a historical site that features a collection of the materials including human remains that arise from the Rwandan genocide of 1994, the Presidential Palace Museum which is the home to President Habyarimana whose death sparked off the genocide horror and the remains of his clashed plane and other interesting Kigali landscapes like the walking through the Muslim quarters or the up class suburb of Nyarutarama. After breakfast, you embark on the transfer to Musaze – Volcanoes National Park 116km about 2 – 3 hours’ driving through impressive hills of Rwanda that have earned her the naming as the land of a thousand hills making stops at ideal spots for sightseeing and photography. Upon arrival in Musaze, you embark on the Musaze caves tour taking a 2 hour walk in the 2km cave that is over 65 million years formed as a result of the lava flow from the two Volcanoes of Sabyinyo and Bisoke. The Musaze Caves feature 31 entrances and the cave was significant in the Rwandan history as it would provide refuge in times of war and even the genocide time. Connect to the lodge after the cave walk for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Gather at the Park Headquarters at Kinigi to embark on the Mount Karisimbi Climbing one of the eight Virunga Volcanoes rising to 4507m which makes it the sixth highest mountain on the continent of Africa. The famous Mount Karisimbi takes 2 days to climb round trip and you start off with the respective mountaineering and equipment along with the porters to summit this dormant Volcano. You traverse the secondary vegetation following steep and challenging slopes before approaching the Dain Fossey site 2,067m above sea level where you take time to visit the historical Karisoke research station where Dian Fossey pitched her tent upon her arrival in 1960s. Having commenced your climb at 2600m above sea level at the Karisimbi trail head 16km from Kinigi, you settle for overnight at 3,700m above sea level with the views of Mount Bisoke. You embark on the hike to the summit starting at 5:30am and following 2 hours of ascent, you summit the Karisimbi Volcano and then embark on the descend back to starting point taking 6 hours inclusive of stops. Connect to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

After our breakfast, start your Rwanda gorilla tracking safari by driving to the headquarters for briefing by park officials at 8am and after enter into the jungle to search for the shy mountain endangered gorillas in Rwanda. Requirements like firm walking shoes, hut, insect repellent, sun screen, rain gears, packed lunch and bottled water are a must plus other tools that one may need once in the tropical rain forest. The gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes is beyond gorilla alone. The sights of the Volcanic Mountains that stretch from Congo through Rwanda to Uganda, the verdant green vegetation that shelter their slopes, the counts of birds along with fauna like duikers and buffaloes combine to generate lasting safari memories. The gorilla trekking activity tends to last from 2 to 8 hours or more depending on the day’s gorilla movement. The one hour of direct encounter with the gorillas brings you closer to these ancient apes, look into their eyes, their gigantic structure that makes them most powerful of all apes and see them forage and play before retreating to the starting point and connect to Gisenyi 110km about 2 hours’ drive arriving in the afternoon. After breakfast, embark on the transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park 294km about 7 – 8 hours’ drive driving along the Congo Nile divide with magical sceneries of the water catchment area for these two prominent rivers arising from the heart of Africa. The views of Lake Kivu and the resort towns of Kibuye and Cyangungu before approaching Nyungwe forest are rewarding. Retire for dinner and overnight.
