8 Days Safari In Kenya Tour – DETAILED SAFARI ITINERARY

Day 1: Drive from Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Enjoy a Game Drive & Visit the Sweetwater’s Chimpanzee Sanctuary

On day one of your 8 Days Kenya Safari, your tour driver guide shall pick you up from Nairobi. After a short tour briefing, you’ll be driven for about 3 hours to the Laikipia area to the north, crossing the equator along the way.

You are heading to a special place, the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy set in the Laikipia region of central Kenya, around the base of the snow-capped Mount Kenya.

It has the highest resident game-to-area ratio of any park or reserve in Kenya. This 90,000-acre conservancy provides protection for Chimpanzees, boasts the largest Black Rhino population in east Africa, and generates income through wildlife tourism and complementary enterprises for re-investment in conservation and community development.

It used to be a huge cattle ranch, but is now the closest place to Nairobi where you can see the Big Five.

You will arrive in time for lunch at your beautiful tented camp/lodge. After lunch, enjoy a game drive to see lions, elephants, leopards, zebras, giraffes, and hippos. You’ll also visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which is the only one of its kind in Kenya.

Rescued chimps from all over central Africa are given refuge here in large enclosures alongside the Ewaso Nyiro River. These highly intelligent apes share about 98% of our DNA and are considered our closest living relatives.

You are able to spend a captivating few hours observing these fascinating animals as they go about their lives, and you may find yourself wondering how remarkably similar their behavior is to our own. After an exciting game drive, you will return to the camp/lodge to relax, have dinner, and overnight.

On day two of your 8 Days Kenya Safari, you will have morning and afternoon game drives tracking the Big 5 – Ol Pejeta is home to the last two northern White Rhinos in the world (unfortunately both of them are female).

Due to its fantastic conservation work with especially Black Rhinos, Ol Pejeta now has “Key 1” status on the IUCN African Rhino Specialist Group categorization, one of only eight sanctuaries in Africa with this distinction.

Other rare animals that can be found on Ol Pejeta include the endangered African Wild Dog, the fine-striped Grevy’s Zebra, Coke’s Hartebeest, Serval, Cheetah, and the very cute Bat-eared Fox.

The more common African wildlife can, of course, be found here too, including Giraffe, Vervet monkey, Olive Baboon, Hippopotamus, Impala, Common Eland, Grant’s gazelle, Kirk’s Dik-dik, Plains Zebra, and Spotted Hyaena. There are also over 300 bird species in the conservancy.

Optional Activity: Night Game Drive: Another option that’s not available in most wildlife conservancies is a night-time safari. With the help of a spotlight and an expert Ol Pejeta guide, you have a chance of spotting Kenya’s more unusual creatures like aardvarks, bat-eared foxes, leopards, and lion hunts.

After breakfast, today set off on a drive of about 4 to 5 hours south to Lake Nakuru. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the magnificent views of the Great Rift Valley. You’ll arrive at your comfortable overnight lodge in time for lunch.

Meaning “dusty place” in the Maasai language, Nakuru is one of the rift valley’s alkaline lakes and is protected by the 188km2 Lake Nakuru National Park. The lake is surrounded by high ridges and the views promise to wow.

You’ll have an afternoon game drive through the park, searching for rare Rothschild’s giraffe, Black rhinos, White rhinos, Cape Buffalos, Leopards, Zebras, Impalas, Lions, Olive baboons, Hyenas, Gazelles, Waterbucks, and more.

You will drive along the salty shores of Lake Nakuru to discover a mind-boggling variety of birds. In fact, Lake Nakuru has been declared a national park because of its vast flamingo population.

The levels of the blue-green alkaline waters of the lake vary annually and this, with other accompanying environmental changes, causes considerable variation in the flamingo population. However, when they are present en masse the lake turns a gorgeous rosy pink.

Besides the flamingos, other waterbirds abound and you can expect to find large flocks of pelicans, cormorants, egrets, herons, ibises, ducks, Spoonbills, Fish Eagles, and Kingfishers. After exploring the park, you’ll return to your camp in the early evening to relax, have dinner, and overnight.

Day 4: Travel To Maasai Mara National Reserve. Enjoy A Late Afternoon Game Drive

Leaving Nakuru behind, set out after breakfast for the highlight of your 8 days Kenya Safari, the Masai Mara, a legendary African game reserve, synonymous with the classical African safari experience.

Teeming with wildlife and bird species, Maasai Mara is known as “the jewel of Kenya’s parks.” You’ll arrive at your lodge/camp in the afternoon for lunch with some time to rest before embarking on a game drive across the open plains of this world-famous reserve.

Known locally as the Mara, Masai Mara National Reserve is an extension of the vast Serengeti ecosystem, which is known for the Great Migration, the greatest natural spectacle on the planet.

Every year from around July to October, as many as 1.5 million Wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of Zebras and Antelopes make a dramatic crossing of the crocodile-infested Mara River to feed on the fresh grasses of the Masai Mara.

The flood of animals filling the open savanna includes herds of elephants and giraffes, and trailing this sea of prey are lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas.

Needless to say, there is never a shortage of drama during the great migration and the abundance of wildlife in the Mara remains superb at any time of year. After your exciting first game drive, return to camp to freshen up and have dinner.

All our guides know Masai Mara intimately and will make sure you see all that this great African wildlife safari park has to offer.

Your game drive will offer you a unique opportunity to fully experience Africa’s endless plains, an abundance of wildlife, and incredible views. Day 6: Half Day Game Drive in Maasai Mara & Cultural Tour of the Masai Village

On day six of your 8 Days Safari In Kenya Tour, you have another wonderful morning game drive to explore more of what Masai Mara offers.

Spanning some 1510km2, the Mara has one of the world’s highest densities of lions, but the birdlife – 470 species, including birds of prey and migratory birds – and the wild savanna are just as alluring. After a game drive, return to your camp for lunch and relaxation.

In the afternoon, visit a traditional Maasai Village where you’ll discover the incredible culture of the indigenous Maasai People.

This visit includes personal interactions with “the Morans,” young Maasai men trained as soldiers to protect the Maasai communities. The Morans once had to kill a lion as a rite of passage into manhood.

The visit begins with a traditional dance performed by men and women. From here, a guide will lead you through the village as you learn about their beliefs, traditions, and daily rituals, including demonstrations of how to make fire using sticks and animal dung.

You will also get the unique opportunity to go into Maasai villagers’ homes and witness the family living arrangement.

At the end of the guided tour, there will be a chance to buy some gift items and curios made by the villagers – a chance to give back to the community.

Day 7: Transfer to Amboseli National Park & Have An Evening Game Drive

Your 8 Days Safari In Kenya Tour will begin with a relaxed breakfast at the lodge.

Thereafter, you will embark on a long drive from Masai Mara to Amboseli National Park, one of Kenya’s most scenic national parks.

Amboseli’s signature attraction is the sight of hundreds of big-tusked (tusker) elephant herds set against the backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro – one of the most iconic images of Africa.

At 5895 meters above sea level, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak and the world’s highest freestanding mountain. You’ll be at your lodge in time for lunch.  In the evening, enjoy a game drive in the park.

During your exploration of the park’s open plains, swamps, and lakes, you’ll once again have the opportunity to enjoy superb game viewing. Possible new mammal ticks include the more localized Yellow Baboon, Striped hyena, Gerenuks, Honey badgers, and, if you are fortunate, Serval cats.

Day 8: Full Morning Game Viewing in Amboseli National Park & Drive Back To Nairobi

Your morning will kick off with a hearty breakfast followed by a full morning of game drive. Amboseli offers spectacular wildlife viewing despite its relatively small size (392km2).

Your guide will lead you in search of animals ranging from the lion, leopard, cheetah, and striped hyena to jackal, giraffe, warthog, and zebra. Bird watchers will be thrilled by the abundant birdlife in the area (over 420 species).

However, the park’s most celebrated residents are the elephants, present in high densities and sporting some of the largest body and tusk sizes in Africa. Elephants are everywhere in Amboseli, reveling in the waters of the marshes, treading dusty pathways led by a trusted matriarch, or, occasionally, posing against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro for awe-struck, camera-wielding visitors.

The elephants of Amboseli also have a further claim to fame. Many of these herds and bulls have been the subjects of the longest-running study of elephant behavior in the wild.

The Amboseli Elephant Research Project, initiated by Cynthia Moss and Harvey Croze and operated by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, has centered around researching and monitoring the elephants of Amboseli for five decades.

After a morning of the big game seeing, return to your lodge for lunch. Afterward, checks out from the lodge and drive to Nairobi for your onward travel arrangements and the end of this fantastic 8 Days Safari In Kenya Tour.
