We’ll then pack our bags, check out and embark on a 311km (5 to 6 hours) panoramic drive northwest to Uganda’s largest national park, Murchison Falls National Park which covers 3,840km². This park is blessed with a high diversity of habitats, the world’s most powerful waterfalls, the world’s longest river and a collection of classic African wildlife including over 451 bird species and 76 species of mammals.

On the way to Murchison, we’ll drive through the impressive stretches of the Nakasongola district, before branching off at Nakitooma for a 7km drive to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the proud home of the only wild rhinos in Uganda. Here you get the opportunity to undertake a 2 hours rhino tracking expedition on foot. The sanctuary is endowed with over 22 re-introduced Southern white rhinos (Ceratotherium simum simum). Day 7 of the 9 Days Uganda Safari in Uganda: Gorilla Trekking In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park & Relax At the Lodge.

Today is going to be an undoubted highlight. And we don’t mean just of this 9 days Uganda safari in Uganda, but of your life. Gorilla trekking is a bucket list experience that naturalists from all over the world dream of doing! We’ll rise very early at around 6.00 am. We’ll have a hearty breakfast and embark on a short drive to the Buhoma park headquarters and meet with the excellent local ranger guides. At around 8.00 am, the guides will provide an informative talk on the gorilla trekking etiquette and the experience. Ugandan authorities are fiercely protective of this natural treasure and allow only a maximum of 6 visitors per day (currently) to visit a particular gorilla family.

After the briefing, the trekking group will then head into the forest in search of these great apes. The trek takes 2-8 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family and you allowed 1 hour with them after encountering them. Owing to the nature of the terrain and the need to explore to find the gorillas, the trek doesn’t follow a path and instead, the guides will cut a route through the undergrowth. Strong footwear is essential and we recommend hiring a local porter to help you carry your bag/camera equipment and provide a steady, supportive hand (porters will be arranged and paid for locally on the day).

Seeing wild Mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is an experience you will never forget. An adult male can weigh up to 220kg and reach 6 feet in height. Gorillas are gentle creatures and are not known to attack unless very severely provoked. The minimum distance that we must keep when we are with the gorillas is 10 metres – we’re not permitted any closer because gorillas are very susceptible to human disease since they share over 98% of our DNA. Please note that if you’re unwell with anything contagious, even a common cold, you’ll not be allowed to trek gorillas. After your one hour with the gorillas, return to the starting point and connect to the lodge for relaxation.

Highlight of the day: – A face to face encounter with one of the surviving families of mountain gorillas who roam Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Accommodation:-

Luxury/ Upmarket: – Gorilla Forest Camp/Chameleon Hill Lodge/Buhoma Lodge

Mid-range/ Moderate: – Gorilla Mist Camp/Gorilla Valley Lodge/Haven Lodge Buhoma

Day 8 of the 9 Days Safari in Uganda: Second Gorilla Trekking. Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for Evening Boat Cruise & Relaxation.

After breakfast, you embark on the second gorilla trekking encounter where you have the option of tracking a different gorilla family and gain a different experience than you had on the previous day. The second Uganda gorilla trek in Bwindi offers the opportunity to explore the Mountain Gorillas in detail including their behaviours, the foraging patterns among others.

You retreat from the activity and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi (‘place of many little birds’) the loveliest lake in Uganda. Its contorted shore encircles 29 islands, surrounded by the beautiful Kigezi Highlands dubbed the Switzerland of Africa.

At Lake Bunyonyi, we’ll undertake a 1-hour sunset boat ride on the serene waters of this magical lake, exploring some of the lake’s legendary islands such as: – the Akampane (Punishment) Island where unmarried girls who became pregnant would be exiled. Here they face one of two possible fates: Any man who did not own sufficient cows to pay for an untainted bride was permitted to fetch the disgraced girl from the island and make her his wife. Failing that, the girl would usually starve to death. Retire from the activity return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Highlight of the day: – Gorilla trekking and the experiential evening boat ride on the magical lake Bunyonyi.
