The 5 days Gorilla trekking Safari in Rwanda and Uganda allows you to explore the gorillas of Rwanda and the gorillas of Uganda at a relaxed pace. The 880 mountain gorilla populations that are left in the wild thrive in the two main habitats namely; the Virunga Massif which supports the 480 and then Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which supports the remaining 400. Tracking gorillas in these two destinations gives a diversified trekking experience including different photo taking opportunities, the magical sceneries, the touch of the local people and the after gorilla trek experience. The safari incorporates the historical tour to Musaze Caves and the boat recreation and relaxation on Lake Bunyonyi with 29 Islands surrounded by the magical Kigezi Highlands.

Day 1 of the 5 days Gorilla trekking Safari in Rwanda and Uganda: Arrive in Rwanda – Kigali International Airport and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon your arrival at Kanombe-Kigali International Airport, you will be received by our guide and who will usher you in to the safari moods. You drive through Kigali City and if it still early, you take time to visit the Gisozi genocide memorial to take time and explore what actually happened in the 1994 horrific genocide that hit Rwanda in the year 1994. The skulls are aligned, writings and photos are displayed and presentations are made to take you through the entire experience. After this encounter settle for lunch after and then drive to Volcanoes National Park 116km about 3 hours’ drive passing through impressive countryside landscapes of Rwanda with rolling hills before arriving in Ruhengeri for relaxation, dinner and overnight

After our breakfast, start your Rwanda gorilla tracking safari by driving to the headquarters for briefing by park officials at 8am and after enter into the jungle to search for the shy mountain endangered gorillas in Rwanda. Requirements like firm walking shoes, hut, insect repellent, sun screen, rain gears, packed lunch and bottled water are a must plus other tools that one may need once in the tropical rain forest. The gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes is beyond gorilla alone. The sights of the Volcanic Mountains that stretch from Congo through Rwanda to Uganda, the verdant green vegetation that shelter their slopes, the counts of birds along with fauna like duikers and buffaloes combine to generate lasting safari memories. The gorilla trekking activity tends to last from 2 to 8 hours or more depending on the day’s gorilla movement. The one hour of direct encounter with the gorillas brings you closer to these ancient apes, look into their eyes, their gigantic structure that makes them most powerful of all apes and explore them forage and play before retreating to the lodge for relaxation. In the afternoon, you can take an optional Musaze Caves walk to explore the historic caves of Musaze that were formed 65million years ago by the basalt lava flow from the Volcanic Mountains of Sabyinyo and Bisoke. The caves feature 31 entrances and stretch to 2km inside. The cave exploration lasts 2 hours walking underground but with the company of the soldier to offer you protection. The caves provided refigium to people in times of war in the pre-colonial Rwanda and even in the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Retire for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, embark on the transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park driving along the magical views of eight mountains that form the Greater Virunga massif. You cross at Chanika boarder and get welcomed by other magical Kigezi Highlands with rolling hills and temperate climate that have earned it the naming as the Switzerland of Africa. You settle at the lodge for lunch and then after you embark on a community tour visiting the Batwa people along with the Bakiga to explore into their way of life and cultural traditions. You can arrange for an impressive cultural performance after which you retreat to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight

Day 4 of the 5 days Gorilla trekking Safari in Rwanda and Uganda: Do gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park & transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for an evening boat cruise and relaxation
After breakfast, you gather at the respective park headquarters of the region that you are tracking to catch up with gorilla family allocation and briefing at 8am led by the UWA Park rangers. After briefing, you connect to the trail head and start the gorilla trek passing through dense vegetation perched on steep slopes and deep valleys with streams flowing. The mature forest cover presents a rich canopy that keeps the interior of the forest dark. The company of the Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guide very armed for protection against any wild animal that may wish to attack. They are also very knowledgeable as they give you a themed interpretation of the forest, its lush flora, the fauna and counts of birds including great deal of Albertine endemics before coming across the critically endangered apes as they forage, the young ones playing and rolling themselves on tree branches and the silverback demonstrating their mighty dominance. The one full hour with the gorillas is a rewarding moment to explore the gorilla in detail and take as many pictures as you can. You retreat from the activity which tends to last 2 – 8 hours after which you transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for an evening boat cruise exploring some of the main Islands out of the 29 Islands that mark the lake surrounded by magical Kigezi Highlands. The sun set views of the lake, the myriad of Islands and the surrounding hills contribute to lasting safari memories of this trip.
