Government to Construct an All Weather Road to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, One of Uganda ‘s tourist favourite parks, could soon have an all-weather road. The government of Uganda has taken a step ahead to design the roads leading to this National Park. Once constructed, this proposed 40-kilometre road from Kisoro to Kanungu will help ease access to all tourist attractions in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This new proposed road will replace the existing murram road which had no safety signage. It had also become impassable during the rainy seasons.
Eng. Emmanuel Twinamatsiko, the Assistant Commissioner at the Ministry of Works and Transport said that the ministry has finalized design studies for the new road, shared cabinet documents and held planning meetings with Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to have the road works start next financial year.“We have finalised plans and UNRA has been involved to expedite plans for an all-weather road to be constructed in the Bwindi, Mgahinga conservation area,” Eng. Twinamatsiko said.
Speaking to the UNRA spokeswoman Allan Ssempebwa, he said that the road is required to ensure that Uganda safari activities (tourism) and other construction activities are carried out well and in a timely manner in the conservation areas. However, people who are familiar with the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park & the Mgahinga conservation area claim an all-weather road alone is not enough to solve the current problems facing the most common tourism conservation areas in the world.
According to Bashir Hangi, communications manager for the Uganda Wild Life Authority (UWA), the roads in Bwindi, Mgahinga conservation area need to be strengthened to increase connectivity for both visitors and locals. He added that roads which will provide protection for wildlife and habitats and their preservation are also required.
