Like many places in Africa, the name Maramagambo does not come out of the blue. It is believed that two (2) children at their tender age got lost in the forest for counts of days trying to forge their way out but in vain. And in the end, when they were rescued, they could not speak as they were short of words to narrate what had happened and as a result the locals termed the forest Maramagambo which is local Runyankole word meaning short of words. This legend is still alive and one would encounter it in the surrounding communities while on a safari in Uganda.
The Maramagambo forest stretches to the shores of Lake Edward and boasts of its extensive concentration of bio-diversity. The Species in the forest include; the Black and white colobus, L’Hoest’s Monkeys, chimpanzees, Blue Monkeys and Red tailed Monkeys. The forest also has Pottos, bush babies among others that are worth exploring while on a safari in Uganda.
The Maramagambo is marked by impressive lush canopy that obstructs sunlight to create a dark environment beneath which is interesting to encounter during the hiking experience. The forest has got crater lakes that were left behind by the volcanic processes that occurred in the area millions of years ago. It also features a bat cave where counts of bats are seen hanging upside down along with a python. These are explored on a well set viewing platform as entering the caves has been prohibited following Marburg claims.
Maramagambo forest is also a rich birding destination with 54 counts of raptor species and a range of migratory birds. The notable birds in Maramagambo forest that can be viewed by birders on safaris to Uganda include; Black-rumped Buttonquail, Martial Eagle African Skimmer, Pink backed Pelican, Chapin’s Flycatcher, African Broadbill, Black Bee-eater, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, White-tailed Lark, Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler, Papyrus Canary, Lesser and Greater Flamingo and Corncrake among others.
The endless lines of soldier ants stretching to over 100m in length and over 6m in width also make the visit to the Maramagambo worth it.
