Rhino trekking is a rewarding wildlife encounter during Uganda safaris and tours and only done in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

Before 1980s, Uganda was a habitat to over 700 Rhinoceros; until massive rhino poaching and civil conflicts claimed lives of hundreds of these species in the wilderness. Rhinos are one of Africa’s big 5 mammals including Leopards, buffaloes, Elephants and lions which are encountered during a wildlife safari in Uganda.

During 1970 civil wars and political insurgencies in Uganda, the number of Rhinos reduced significantly with the last sighting reported in 1983. But following the Rhino re-stocking programme that saw them re-introduced in 2005, Uganda is now enjoys the taste of them. Only 2 found at the Entebbe Zoo and 19 found in Ziwa Rhino sanctuary in Nakasongola en route to the Uganda tour destination of Murchison Falls National Park, approximately 180 km from Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

By the support from Rhino fund Uganda and Uganda wildlife Authority, Ziwa Rhino sanctuary is home to over 19 southern Rhinos making the place a renowned center for Rhino trekking in Uganda, visited by different people across the world.

Rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is done by foot though driving to the close locations depending on the Rhino movements can be involved. Rhino Fund Uganda has well skilled and informed guides that make the encounter with the gigantic species beyond the ordinary.

Other activities that can be combined with Rhino tracking include; Bird watching including the famous Shoebill canoe ride in Rogogo Swamp. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a proud home to over 250 bird species and is a great destination for avid birders interested in finding those rare African bird species.

The Rhino tracking lasts for about 1-2 hours and the guests on vacation holiday in Uganda interested in spending a night at sanctuary can consider the beautiful Amuka Safari Lodge – a good Midrange facility before proceeding with the itinerary the next day.
