THE DELAYED REPARATION OF LAKE KIVU BOAT CAUSING REVENUE SHORTAGE – RWANDA SAFARIS NEWS
Rwanda as a country is an interesting destination to encounter on Rwanda safaris. It has a lot of attractions and activities ranging from gorilla tracking, chimpanzee trekking, and wildlife safaris. However, like any other safari destination that considers tourism as a development priority, Rwanda has not lagged behind in the attempts to diversify the Rwanda safari products. The introduction of the boat cruise on Lake Kivu in 2009 can be regarded as one of the attempts to diversify tourism products which will increase safaris to Rwanda and eventually boosting revenue collections.
This state of the art boat that was secured at a cost of Rwf 308 million ($485,000) with the seating capacity of 20 people named Umunezero in a local dialect had dominated the cruising services for two years after its acquisition in 2009. This had opened opportunity for travelers on safari in Rwanda to encounter the scenic views of the Kivu Lake. Unfortunately the boat experienced mechanical problems succumbing to immobility. Now, for the three years, the Italian made Rwanda safari offer has been grounded and lie idle on the shores of Lake Kivu. This has not only led to loss of potential tourism revenue from the cruises but also has negatively the general promotion of Rwanda’s tourist activities according to the Auditor General Report. The boat was also meant to ease transfer between Rusizi and Rubavu districts including others along Kivu Lake purposely for high-end tourists on Rwanda safari.
