Bugoma Central Forest Reserve in Uganda, Africa

Bugoma Central Forest Reserve in Uganda is an ecotourism site and tropical rainforest found in Hoima District.

This Bugoma Forest covers an area of 411 km2 and it is found along the Western Rift Valley near Lake Albert.

In 1996, the Forest Department recognized Bugoma Forest as a moist, medium-altitude, semi deciduous forest, which ranks it as a real biodiversity hotspot.

There are various attractions in this magnificent forest reserve, for example, there are more than 23 species of mammals, nine of which are on the red list of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Other exceptional species include over 225 bird species, and 260 tree species, with about half of the forested section dominated by iron wood, and a community of chimpanzees that began being habituated in January 2016.

Additionally, the Bugoma Forest has 7 species of the Albertine Rift Endemics, 14 tree species that are on the red list of the IUCN, 12 globally threatened species, and 4 species that are endemic to the Albertine Rift Mountains.

Other attractions to experience at the Bugoma Forest Reserve include reptile species, butterfly species, red tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and baboons. The major safari activities at the Bugoma Forest Reserve covers nature walks on walking trails of about 30 kilometers and short walking trails of about 200 meters.

Four rivers drain this forest: the Waisoke, River Bubwa, River Sonso, and the Wake.

Despite having this impressive number of attractions, the forest has faced threats from deforestation/timber cutting from the local communities to the extent that even the permanent rivers like the Hohwa and the reserve River Rwemiseke stopped flowing in the reserve. Other streams flow through the forest, draining into some small rivers and later into Lake Albert.

Human encroachment is also another threat that has led to the illegal harvesting of trees and timber cutting. Debates have occurred on whether to turn the forest into a sugarcane plantation. However, for conservation purposes, the suggestion was not carried on although a small part of the forest has a sugarcane plantation.
