Gorilla safaris in Rwanda are at the helm of the Rwanda safari products and in fact, they form the background for the sale of other safari products including genocide sites, culture, and wildlife.  The destination Rwanda rises with the rolling hills that have earned it a crown as a land of a thousand hills and at its north-west extreme, it adjoins the Virunga Volcanoes that mark the border with part of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. This section of the country is protected by Volcanoes National Park and it is the only area in Rwanda where mountain gorillas are known to be thriving as thus forming the ground for gorilla safaris in Rwanda.

Volcanoes National Park being part of the Virunga massif that supports a count of 604 Mountain Gorillas more than half of their global population has ten gorilla families that are habituated for a human encounter. Unlike Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where there are four gorilla trekking points, Volcanoes National Park has one departure point which is also its headquarter named Kinigi which is the centre for all Rwanda safari activities in the park.

The gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park include the Susa A, Susa B, Hirwa, Umubano, Uganda, Amahoro, Group 13 (Agashya), Sabyinyo, Kwitonda and Bwenge. This puts the total gorilla permits in Rwanda at 80 each costing $1500 per permit for a foreign nonresident and 15000$ for the exclusive Gorilla experience for a group of 3 pax.

Rwanda mountain gorillas are found in the Volcanoes National Park and were habituated by Dian Fossey for a long time till her death. Besides mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda, you can visit her various national wildlife parks for wildlife such as Akagera National Park & Nyungwe National Park for Chimpanzee trekking & Canopy walk but you can also tour the Genocide memorial stadiums as well as the various cultural museums to enhance your Rwanda safari.
