Kabwoya Game reserve is a hidden gem situated on the floor of Albertine Rift Valley. The reserve is positioned between the rift Valley escarpment, Lake Albert and the breathtaking blue mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. A Uganda safari Kabwoya Wildlife Game Reserve offers visitors one of the best scenic areas in western Uganda.
Kabwoya covers an area of 87 square kilometres and is boarded to the north by a community wildlife Area called Kaiso – Tonya. The two areas originally constituted the Kaiso-Tonya Controlled Hunting Area, gazetted in 1963. This area became a wildlife Reserve in 2002 but until today, few people know about it.
With the translocation of more animals into the Reserve, it is increasingly becoming a Uganda wildlife safari paradise and some of the species likely to be encountered during a Uganda tour to the reserve include Buffaloes, Uganda Kobs, waterbucks, Bushbucks, bush duikers and Jackson’s hartebeests. Primates such as Baboons, Black and white Colobus monkeys, Chimpanzees and the Vervet monkeys can be seen on shores of River Wamababya and Hoywa.
There are also over 460 bird species that call Kabwoya Wildlife reserve home. These include the Albertine Rift endemic bird species such as Rwenzori turaco, Handsome Francolin, Willard’s Sooty Boubou, Stripe Breasted-Tit, Grauer’s broadbill, Dwarf Honey Guide, Dusky Crimson Wing and Shelley’s.
This Reserve does not only boast of its wildlife species and bird species but also the breathtaking scenery which makes the place a mini paradise. The scenic view around where the reserve is with Lake Albert below and overlooking Democratic Republic of Cong’s Blue mountains is that perfect place for Nature lovers.
Uganda fishing tours within Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is conducted from Lake Albert where tourists can be able to catch different sizes of the Nile Perch. Half day or full-day fishing adventures using motorboats can be organized for tourists. Only a maximum of three anglers is allowed in each boat for safety reasons.
