Though gorilla trekking activity is considered a full day activity, travelers on Uganda gorilla Safaris at times return from the Impenetrable forest of Bwindi by midday or 2pm leaving their afternoon free.  And instead of spending this second night at the lodge in Bwindi, a fascinating drive via the scenic Kigezi Highlands dubbed the Switzerland of Africa to Lake Bunyonyi for evening relaxation can be a better alternative.

Lake Bunyonyi, believed to be the second deepest on the African continent is a very scenic lake marked with a range of 29 Islands which have formed the background of its naming as the Lake of a thousand Islands. It’s a unique Uganda safari tour attraction of its own offering very rewarding local canoe paddles as guests interact with the local fishermen and the Islanders connecting to and from the mainland. Bunyonyi is only second to Lake Tanganyika always explored on East Africa Safaris in Tanzania.

Following a challenging gorilla trek in the rugged landscapes of Bwindi marked with dense forested steep slopes and narrow valleys with streams at the bottom, there can’t be a more perfect place to freshen up than Lake Bunyonyi. However, the combination of Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi is much easier if one has tracked Ruhija region of Bwindi as it is only 52km about 1 ½ – 2 hours drive. The travellers on gorilla safari in Uganda tracking the southern regions of Rushaga and Nkuringo can as well transfer to Lake Bunyonyi reducing the drive distance to Kampala / Entebbe the following day. Buhoma in the north of Bwindi is about 3 ½ – 4 hours drive and unless one is spending two (2) nights at Lake Bunyonyi or proceeding to Rwanda or Mgahinga,  the combination can be reconsidered.
