Located to the southwest of Rwanda, the Nyungwe Forest National Park is close to the border of Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the south and the west respectively. Nyungwe National Park among all Rwanda National Parks, is recorded to be among the ancient African forests that are noted to have survived the last ice age.

Nyungwe Forest is among the largest montane forests in the East of Africa and is considered to be the most well-conserved forest in the entire highlands of Central Africa.

Overview – Nyungwe Forest National Park

The Nyungwe Forest is located near the Congo Nile divide and marks the point of separation between the catchment areas of the River Congo that flows to the west emptying in the Atlantic Ocean and the River Nile that flows to the north emptying in the Mediterranean Sea. The forest itself shelters one of the remote sources of the Nile River which is known as the world’s longest.

The Nyungwe Forest National Park was gazetted in the year 2004 covering 970km2 in size with the composition of the montane rain forest, bamboo, bogs, swamps, and grassland. The Nyungwe National Park is on close proximity to Cyangungu town which is 54km from the park and a resort town on the Rwanda’s largest Lake Kivu.

The Nyungwe Forest is diverse in terms of bio-diversity accruing from diverse habitats that characterize the park. Nyungwe Forest National Park features 13 Species of Primate, the 1068 plant Species, 310 bird Species, 85 mammal Species, 38 reptile Species along with 32 amphibian species.

The Nyungwe Forest features a prominent canopy which has inspired the Rwanda Development Board to build the walk way that is the first of its stature in East of Africa and the third of its kind on the African continent.

At 2950m ASL, you explore the sub alpine vegetation which is characterized by bamboo and shrubs like Podocarpus, bamboo, Erica johnstonii and Phillipia.

From 2500m ASL, there thrives species like Podocarpus, Macaranga, Hagenia Syzygium and Balthacaria.

Starting from 2250m ASL, you explore the tall tree species along with fern species like Newtonia, Polycscias, Entandophragma, Symphonia and Cyathea manniana.

At 1900m ASL, there are taller tree species like Carapa, Newtonia, Engtandophragma, Prinaria exelsium and Cyathea manniana. Considering the fact that Nyungwe is a mature forest, the Epiphytes such as ferns and mosses cannot be missed.

Nyungwe Forest is a moist mountainous forest that is worth exploring.

Chimpanzee trekking encounter is conducted daily departing at the park headquarters in the morning at 8am and tends to last 2 – 6 hours.

Nyungwe Forest National Park shelters the largest grouping of colobus monkeys in the whole of Africa with a count of over 400 numbers.

It also commences in the morning from the park headquarters and tends to last 2 – 5 hours involving one full hour of direct viewing.

It is such magical experience to come across a forest covered with colobus monkeys with their black and white colors. The sight of the young ones which possess only white fur when they are still young is impressive to encounter.

Nyungwe Forest National Park features the best canopy walk in the whole of East Africa and the third of its stature on the continent of Africa.

Built in the month of October 2010, the Nyungwe Forest Canopy walk way stretches over 200 feet from the ground and 90m in length.

Igishigishigi Trail

Karamba Trail

Karamba trail is averagely easy to trek and passes close the initial gold mine, market and the army camp. The trail features impressive bird watching views and features beautiful fern trees along.

Umugote Trail

Umugote trail offer magical views of the different ridges, the lush flowers, the rain forest and magical views of the Kibira National Park in Burundi on a clear day. The trail also offers impressive views for birds and primates.

Umuyove Trail

Umuyove trail also referred to as Mahogany Trail stretches through the Nyungwe forest tallest trails featuring a good scent of their leaves. The trail passes along the waterfall with magical views. Uwinka Trail
