Pian Upe wildlife Reserve
Pian Upe wildlife reserve is the second largest conservation area after Murchison Falls National park and is one of Uganda’s best secret kept reserve covering an area of about 2,788km² to the North of Mountain Elgon and it is being managed by Mountain Elgon Conservation department. The reserve is located in Nakapiripiti in the North Eastern part of Uganda. The southern part of the game reserve as gazetted in 1958 as the Debasien Animal Sanctuary and the area was later expanded northwards in 1964 and it was named Pian Upe Game Reserve.
Pian Upe wildlife reserve has stunning landscape sceneries with surrounding mountains and it is composed of hot springs and also sighted as the best destinations with mercury at Mount Kadam and the wildlife reserve derived its name from the Karamojong local dialect which means Friendly Enemy.
Toro Semliki wildlife reserve is located within Ntoroko and Kabarole districts in the Western Uganda North East of the Bundibugyo road.
The reserve extends to the southern shores of Lake Albert and the northern base of the Rwenzoris and it is a habitat of grassland, Savannah, forest and wetland. Semliki wildlife reserve has a relatively altitude of about 700m above the sea level.
How the wildlife reserve got its Name
Around this reserve there are two most popular tribes that are pastoralist the pian, who are a part of sub group of the Karamoja and the Upe, who belong to a Kalenjin speaking people widely known as the Pakot within Kenya and Uganda hence the name Pian Upe.

The game reserve is composed with woodland and grassland vegetation. It has also a section of Kopjes, riverine woodland and the tree species in the reserve include the desert date, the red acacia, harrisonia abyssinica, bush willows, red spike thorns and also shrubs such as wooly caper bush and butterfly pea.

The wildlife reserve is a home to numerous mammal species such as elephants, giraffes, lions and black rhinos. The reserve is also a home to plain zebras, common elands and Oribi with the only roan remaining antelope in Uganda and the reserve also has magnificent reptiles such as the Rock pythons and puff adders as well as water snakes which are harmless.
The wildlife reserve also has the biggest population of lizards mainly the Savannah monitors, common agama and skinks, geckos and chameleons with primates such as vervet monkeys and olive baboons.

Pian Upe wildlife reserve is a birder’s paradise because it is home to a massive number of birds about 242 which are confirmed and the 11 unconfirmed bird species. This provides opportunities of spotting largest bird on the land the Ostrich and only found only in Kidepo Valley National park.

The headquarters of the Pian Upe wildlife reserve are situated along Mbale-Moroto which is about 90km from Mbale and 11km north of the wildlife reserve at the Northern boundary.

The best time to visit Pian Upe is in the dry season from January to march because the vegetation is dry and gives you clear views and also animals gather at the water sources which also gives you clear views for game viewing.
