Rwanda’s Historical past in brief;
The land of a thousand hills a popular slogan that she derives from her rolling hills, the destination Rwandan was traditionally a monarch like most of the African societies. A homogeneous nation with three tribal groups, the hereditary Kingship was from the Tutsi and palace of the last two Kings of Rwanda; King Musinga and his son King Rudahigwa still thrive at Nyanza to the south of Kigali. The other tribes included the Bahutu and the Batwa who all lived together in harmony complimenting each other as they did different things; the Tusti were pastoralists, the Hutu were cultivators while the Batwa were good at pottery.
With the coming of Colonialists and use of divide and rule policy, the Belgians stratified the society according to these tribal groups and used the local leaders who in this case were the Tutsi to administer and implement the colonial practices which included forced labour. This in turn created strong divisions among the Rwandans which later culminated into the Rwandan Revolution of 1959 that saw many Tutsis go to exile. The exiled Rwandese who were majorly Tutsis made several attempts to return home but would always be repulsed by the Hutu regime that was in power until 1990 when a strong force of Rwanda Patriotic Front made an invasion and this civil war resulted into the bloody ethnic conflict in Rwanda that led to death of over 800,000 Tustis and moderate Hutus.
Following this unfortunate incident, it’s surprising how the Rwandan society has recovered to build one of the fastest growing economies on the continent and made all possible to build social cohesion amongst the citizens. This history forms part of the Rwanda tour product and sites of reference still exist as living testimony of what transpired in the Rwanda’s past.
