Due to the fact that tourism sector in Uganda is being a highly perception and media oriented industry, the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities has revealed the Tourism Communication Working Group (TCWG). The team will be the sector’s new communication frontier to unify information distribution in all its agencies.
The Minister of tourism, Maria Mutagamba expressed that she was “very happy with the formation of TCWG .She added, the establishment of tourism team is a right move to ensure information flow and equal promotion of all tourism activities in the sector. She further explained that now all aspects of tourism can grow together, without say, some tourism products are being more prominent or important than others.
The Tourism communication working group is composed of seven (7) officers in charge of information, communication and public relations in all the six Ministry organizations or agencies chaired by the Ministry’s Public Relations unit and they include among others Emma Nahayo Mugizi Chairperson, Vincent Mugaba secretary and other members include Brian Mulego member; Belindah Atim, Jossy Muhangi Ms Angella Atukunda ,Patricia, Nuwagaba and Everlyn Nalumu
The Minister encouraged the TCWG team to speak as one since the tourism sector has many voices and also heartens other voices to respect the team. She also advised them to arm themselves with the real facts needed to curb down gossips and restore Uganda safari destination identity and trust.
Ambassador Patrick Mugoya -the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, during the occasion also expressed that there has been a challenge in information dissemination or circulation among various agencies/organizations which resulted to the distribution of uncoordinated information within the tourism sector. Ambassador Mugoya also heartened the newly constituted TCWG team to work together and speak as one voice.
The TCWG team Chairperson, Mrs. Emma Nahayo Mugizi, who is also the Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities expressed that “It has been very easy for the media in the country to focus on the negative part of tourism while ignoring the positive achievement of the sector .So they will work night and day to see that they promote the positive aspect of tourism sector in Uganda.
Mugizi said TCWG aims at streamlining the voice of tourism sector and ensuring that one aspect of sector does not suffer at an expense of others. “All aspects of tourism sector deserve to be equally promoted and given the same attention. Where the sector overlaps with others, TCWG aims at using its links and networks to curb such challenges.
To me, this seems to be good development to the tourism sector which is fragile and can be affected by information positively or negatively, therefore existence of such team will help to control perception and visitors on Uganda safari tours, or stake holders from misleading information.
