Kyambura Wildlife Game Reserve Uganda

Kyambura forest reserve in Queen Elizabeth National Park is located on the north-eastern side of Queen Elizabeth National Park, approximately 30 km from the park headquarters. Kyambura Gorge spans a distance of 11 km and links to the Kazinga Channel, which forms the northern boundary of the reserve. The reserve’s mean altitude is 1100 metres above the seal level. The total area of the reserve is 156 sq. km.

Kyambura Game Reserve was formed to serve as a buffer zone to the Queen Elizabeth National Park Uganda. It was first established as a Controlled Hunting Area in 1963 and was gazetted as a game reserve in 1965. The game reserve lies to the west of Kyambura gorge and it is part of Queen Elizabeth national park. Kyambura Game Reserve is the only spot for Uganda chimpanzee trekking safari during a tour to Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National park.

  • Primate in Kyambura

Kyambura wildlife reserve is a home for many primates but the prominent ones are the habituated chimpanzees. Besides chimpanzees, there are 12 other primates including red-tailed monkey, Black-and-White Colobus, Baboons and Vervet monkeys.

Lake George, the Kazinga Channel and the seven crater lakes within the reserve offer a large and varied habitat to many birds, including 110 wetland species, including flamingos and Black winged stilts. There is a roosting site for White Pelicans at Kashaka Fishing village.

The tall trees of Kyambura wildlife reserve attract a number of birds to see in this area, for example, falcon, fly catchers, white napped pigeons, blue-headed Bee-eaters, the fin foot Martial Eagle, Bar-tailed Godwit, Black-rumped Buttonquail, Shoebill, African Skimmer, Lesser plus Greater Flamingo and Chapin’s Flycatcher.

Getting There

Roads

Kyambura wildlife reserve can be accessed most easily from Kampala. Two routes run from Kampala to Mweya, the primary tourism hub in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The most scenic route passes through Fort Portal (410km) and offers detours to Kibale, Semuliki and Rwenzori Mountains national parks.

The alternative (420km) runs through Mbarara and Bushenyi and passes Lake Mburo National Park. Queen Elizabeth National Park’s southerly Ishasha sector is directly on the main route to/from Buhoma, the main mountain gorilla tracking trailhead in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which lies 62km south.

Air travel

Charter flights can be arranged to airstrips at Kasese, Mweya and Ishasha from Kampala’s

Kajjansi airfield or Entebbe International Airport.
